Wow, only 52. I wonder if the period of drink/drugs addiction finally caught up with him.
That's You Know My Name, Gasoline and Black Hole Sun on today's playlist then.
Another one of my favourites gone!!
Agree, best Bond theme.
I agree - best Bond theme:
Blackhole sun is one of my favourites too
The original:
And quite a few of the covers too:
I'm truly shocked. Big fan of Soundgarden and his solo work. 'You Know My Name' will take on a different meaning.
RIP Chris.
What a shock, Audioslave were very underrated, Chris had such a distinct powerful voice - good frontman too.
That's terrible to hear.
I really enjoyed his work as part of Audioslave with some of the RATM crew. I also rated his Bond effort quite highly.
What a shock...very talented musician. I saw Soundgardens last British gig at Reading they were superb. Loved Audio Slave as well. RIP
Wow - so young!!
Loved the Bond theme by the way!
Great voice, best Bond theme ever. Black Hole Sun one of the best Grunge.
Will be badly missed.
RIP Chris .i was a big soundgarden fan

Sad news indeed, a truly great vocal and another one taken too early.
I think that's only Vedder left from the big names of the grunge era with Cornell, Staley, Cobain, Weiland etc all having passed now.
While Cornell was probably best known for Soundgarden and Audioslave, I wouldn't overlook the earlier stuff he recorded with Temple of the Dog, some great tracks on their album - particularly hunger strike, say hello 2 heaven, call me a dog etc.

I'm shocked and sad at this one.
I certainly think it was one of the very best Bond themes also.
So clever my foot fell off.
Was saddened to hear the news this morning.
A truly talented vocal, taken at such an early age.
RIP Chris.
That's sad, he had a distinctive voice and I used to enjoy Soungarden.
I wonder what the cause of death will be?
RIP Chris.
Cheers,
Neil.
Badmotorfinger is on of my favourite albums, he had a great voice and was a great frontman when I saw Soundgarden live on the Superunknown tour. Sad to see him go.
Apparently the police are investigating a possible suicide.
Terrible news. Really hope it isn't a suicide. Still love Badmotorfinger and 'Jesus Christ Pose' is a classic. RIP Chris.
Saw him solo and acoustic at the Palladium a few years ago, was a pretty good gig. 52 is very young.
Sad news this. I'll definitely be playing the Audioslave album tonight.
Very sad news, mention of suspected suicide by the police.
I only know him from the Bond theme, but no age is it?
Sad if it's true it was suicide... Someone suggested auto-asphyxiation in another forum.

What a lost...RIP

Gutted. Huge part of my 20's spent listening to Soundgarden.
Went to see them a couple of years back - Chris's voice live was amazing.
RIP - another legend gone :(

Another fan here; Soundgarden along with the other Grunge greats were very much a soundtrack to my youth, also agree with most of the posters, best Bond theme ever.
RIP
Apparently now confirmed as suicide.
Truly sad news...
I cannot believe this, Chris Cornell and Soundgarden, Audioslave and Temple of the dog are to me, the Bowie of my generation. Fell on black days is probably my favourite song still, after 23 years, and has an added poignancy after reading that Chris took his own life. Superunknown is most certainly in my top 3 albums of all time. Disbelief. RIP Chris.
Very sad, loved Superunknown, reminds me clearly of a certain period in my life I won't see again :(
Genuinely embarrassed to admit I've never heard of him, perhaps I'd recognise some of the songs if I heard them but that particular musical genre is not really up my alley. Will do a bit of listening to remedy that, always open to new stuff.

Im sure you will recognise Black Hole Sun :)
Just listened to black hole sun, never heard it before, didn't ring any bells at all. Weird. Is this one of those 'massive in the US barely known in the U.K' situations or have I somehow missed a whole musical oeuvre?

He had a great voice, not something particularly synonymous with the grunge scene.
Think Nirvana/STP/Soundgarden/Pearl Jam, that whole Seattle scene which was so creative and influential. Cornell in particular along with Eddie Vedder were great vocalists whilst Cobain was arguably the pioneer for that scene. Sad that he had achieved all that yet if he was depressed he was unable to seek help ( I know that is not uncommon). That vid posted below is somewhat ironic
