Partial to a spot of Zacapa myself, it's expensive but very tasty!

You are getting conned, all rum (or whiskey for that matter) tastes smooth If you add 45g of sugar to a bottle. It's an interesting experiment.

Not sure where you get the 45g from (http://thefatrumpirate.com/hydrometer-tests-2).
Also smooth doesn't equal nice, and this is definitely nice (sugar will always be there - either in the rum or through the mixer).

If you're into mixing, the new Pepsi Max ginger is rather good

Always drink mine (sailor jerry, kraken, navy, whatever is on special) with cola, so is it worthwhile going for a premium brand as I can’t get on with it neat ?

The best rum with cola in my view is Havana Club 7yr.

    Mine arrived Friday.

I have scant memory of Friday evening.

I was like the leader of a zombie reenactment society yesterday.

    Highly recommended!

all adding sugar will do is sweeten a drink , to make any old petrol smooth (or any good drink smoother) add 1-2 teaspoons of glycerine to the bottle and shake (you can get a bottle of glycerine from the chemists for about 50 pence ) .

Thought I'd bounce this thread as just picked up a bottle La Hechicera Fine Aged Rum from M&S as it is reduced to clear at £30.40. It seems to get v. good reviews and is normally £42 at most places.

That's pure nonsense. There's no sugar in distilled alcohol and only tiny amounts from the wood during aging or added caramel for colour.

I'm not against added sugar, glycerol, vanillin and flavourings if it is listed on the label. It's the deception to give the illusion of a better product that I resent, particularly in 'super-premium' rums. Even if I were mixing my rum with fizzy sugar drinks I'd still not be OK with hidden sugar in the rum itself.
