Wouldn't surprise me if there's a strong correllation between no-pets and shoes-off and vice versa?

I have different expectations of animals and humans. I don't expect a dog to wipe it's arse after having had a shit for example. and I don't expect humans to go up to strangers in the park and stick their tongues up strangers arses. But then I've had a sheltered life and ymmv.

Cats are really clean creatures for example. They clean their feet every day, certainly more often than most people clean their shoes.
Good luck everybody. Have a good one.

You just wipe his feet with a clean wet cloth very easy.

I live in a three storey house with a mixture of hard flooring and carpets. All the stairs are carpeted.

My wife and I remove our own shoes as soon as we enter the property and we ask that visitors do the same. The carpets are cream and will quickly show any dirt/become marked should people walk around in their shoes, particularly at times when it is raining outside (as it does very often in South Yorkshire).

We also have two house cats. I do not want pathogens from outside that my cats have no previous exposure to being ground into my carpets for them to later ingest and become unwell from.

Anecdotally, in my work as a doctor I have had periods where I have had to carry out home visits as part of my daily routine and I would say it is 25/75 shoes off/on respectively as a visitor. I always offer to take my shoes off on a home visit. There might be an element where people do not want to be seen to be troubling someone who has visited their home to help them, but I offer nonetheless as I would expect that courtesy from a visitor to my own home. I also think that in more working class areas the proportion of shoes off seems to be higher. Again, anecdotally, that would reflect my own experiences of childhood in a northern working class area where most of my mates' mums would insist on our shoes being taken off as soon as we went in each other's houses.

I wonder if there's a north/south divide or possibly a divide due to social class that in part might help explain the pattern?

Good response, in the quote above I just took the percentage from your response and the N/S divide comment is very interesting.

Its very interesting, to me, as I couldn't have imagined a 25/75% split in my wildest dreams on this issue. I said earlier I would have thought it to be a 1 in 20 or similar based on my life experience.

What I don't understand about people who insist in shoes on - think of the following scenario:

Your attractive neighbour invites you around to help with a problem with her fridge - after a few glasses of wine, you notice how hot it is and take your shirt off. Soon you are having sexual congress on the kitchen floor and... you have to stop to take your shoes off.

It just a no from me.

+1, although I am lazy and on the hard floors (if my shoes are clean) I may just nip in to get something.

I do however do not walk with my cycling shoes inside, as I am worried about marking the flooring with the cleats

    Hassle ??
I'm curious, you take your shoes off before going to bed so where's the extra hassle in removing them when you walk in the door ?.
It's the same single requirement in both cases.

Serious, though hypothetical question for the shoe removers:

Her Majestey Queen Elizabeth attends your home, with the usual entourage.
Who asks her to remove her shoes?

    Her equerry.

Although hypothetically you'd be asked to supply a list of any such requirements/requests before they arrange a royal visit :D.

I do, and she can pick the Corgie's shit up from the garden too.

Shoe wearers, you wake up in the middle of the night and you need a piss – do you have a route around for your brogues in the dark before heading to the crapper?

Lazy Sunday mornings when you're hungover and can't yet face the daily routine, do you lace up the shoes whilst still in your boxers and kick back on the sofa until the missus has sorted your bacon sarnie?

They say that but I've been in a lot of houses in the US and the washers are usually in the garage or basement.

Never seen them in the bathroom. Sounds mad!

Not half as mad as skiddied smalls being handled in the same room as food is prepared, but as above I'm saving that rant for another day.

We never wear shoes indoors for purely comfort reasons, always barefooted or with sliders.

However I wouldn't dream of asking a guest to remove their shoes, just seems rude. Especially as Dot may be making her way cross the floor to her bed/armchair.

If she has been in a wet garden we leave her in the kitchen to dry off but otherwise she has the run of the house, bedrooms excepted.

I think that dog owners will never be as precious with their stuff as other folk.

    You can't be!

    Cheers,
    Neil.

I usually take my outdoor shoes off when I come in and put on some indoor shoes (trainers/whatever) as particularly in winter with all hard flooring including quite a few tiles, it is too cold without any shoes! However I regularly forget so it isn't really a rule.

I don't ask guests to do anything specific with shoes and most keep them on unless they are really messy. Easy enough to clean afterwards and no risk of wear/stains to carpet!

What he said, unless you have carpets indoors which I actually find more unhealthy as there is always something growing on them even when you hoover regularly, but I will oblige when I am visiting

She was round our place last week she always takes her shoes off, its when she puts her feet on the table that bothers me.

All this is much easier if you favour a slip-on loafer. Perhaps a penny loafer or those ones with the natty dangly bits on the front. All that fiddling with laces is becoming more difficult as I get older, and as I was born in Essex a casual slip-on pub loafer is my natural footwear choice. Can't stoop as low as a white sock though!!

I don't expect guests to take their shoes off in the house, as I think that's more of a Middle Eastern way, but if you remember that throwing shoes at someone, that is an ultimate insult in their traditions, so I can relate to taking shoes off, before going into the rooms. I wear slippers in the house and mostly only wear shoes outside.

Thanks Mike, that's pink alright. She is a normal colour until she gets really hot.

Her armchair is in front of a south facing window and she loves to get cooked up and bask in the sun which makes her go pink like humans do.

You really only notice it on the white dogs as their skin is human colour.

I rub a bit of sunscreen down her beak when I take her out on sunny days.

    This is her normal colour...

    Cheers,
    Neil.

Yesterday, I went into Costa coffee. There was this overgrown man slouching on the sofa with his feet on the coffee table. Nevermind taking the shoes off on the carpet. with disgusting Nike trainers on. The laces were also undone. I sat there watching him, thinking what has happen to humanity..

It was clear that this man didn't care about himself or anyone else. Probably the type of person who goes to bed with his shoes on.

We operate a 'no shoes' regime in the house, makes a lot of sense to me. We relax that a bit when the weather's dry and we're in the hall or kitchen which have hard floors, but not on the carpets.

I always offer to remove shoes when visiting, to me it's the right thing to do.

No shoes in a house (also in a lot of traditional style restaurants etc) is standard in South Korea. Was one thing that always stood out even after being there for 3 years.
To do anything else is seen as simply unacceptable given the amount of dirt/germs it is viewed would be brought in to a house by shoes.
