WTF? I was just listening to Wildflowers on the way home from work. Very sad news. Hadn't he just finished a big tour?
life support turned off.
Another one gone.
Rob.

Somehow I thought he was older, gone far too young. RIP.
Wow, genuinely shocked. RIP
Whoever does not know how to hit the nail on the head should be asked not to hit it at all.

Oh no. That is so very sad.
Just been listening to 'Damn The Torpedos' album over the weekend, I was wondering how old he is.
Looking at my CD collection I notice how many artists have died over the past 2-3 years. Rock music and longevity don`t go together.

Shocked!
Check this long list of songs!

Shocked!! Just home and seen this, didn't even know there was a problem.
Penned some great tunes.
Good grief, very sad indeed. I can't believe how many we have lost. I'm starting to feel very mortal.
Rest in peace, you will be missed.
Is this 'Fake News"?
Nooooooooooooo.
Legend
Was fortunate to see him in Hyde Park over summer - a great loss to music.
RIP.
When you look long into an abyss, the abyss looks long into you.........
I have memories of TOGWT back in the 70s......American Girl. Magic stuff.
RIP
Thats a shame, RIP Tom. Saw him with Zimmerman at Wembley Arena (in '86 I think) among other times. Always a good set and great with the Heartbreakers.
Very sad RIP Mr Petty .
Now possibly alive (just)

Bloody hell that is bad news.
What a star and my wife loves the Wilbury’s albums.
Gutted.
Can honestly say hear a track for the first time and be completely hooked. I remember driving on the M6 by Fort Dunlop in Birmingham and ‘Running Down a Dream’ came on the radio, instant love and I still love that track years later. I cannot think of a single track in my life that had such an instant impact.
Hope the last two reports are true and he's still with us.
Guardian has just popped up on my phone; he is gravely ill but not dead. Hoping for a miracle
How saddening that the wrong news has come out. Something seems so undignified about it.
Officially gone. 😢😢
RIP Tom. Loved the song "Freefallin."
Sad to read this this morning :-(

Skating away on the thin ice of a new day
Back in the 70's went to a friends house and he was playing an album. Asking what it was he held up 'Damn the Torpedoes' which I immediately bought. Saw that tour and a few after. For me, Petty and The Heartbreakers were the definition of 'A Band'. Pity his death is eclipsed by the Las Vegas shootings
One of the few American artists with an equally great band that can stand shoulder to shoulder with Bruce & the E Street Band.
Have seen the latter twice, should have made the effort to see Tom.
A real shame. One of my favourite artists that I now never got to see. Some friends saw him over the summer and raved about it.
RIP.
very sad news... another of the Traveling Wilburys gone...
What wonderful music this man made. During my 4 years in the Glasgow Uni Union pub, it was always Tom Petty songs first on the Jukebox - and I've been a fan ever since. So mellow, so uplifting, and so catchy. Thanks Tom for the memories and for leaving your music behind for all to enjoy.
RIP Tom, Running down a dream.. Was never his biggest fan exactly but when you look at what he did it's nothing short of an amazing list.
In to the great wide open & Refugee were two of my favourites.
Bloody shame RIP Tom
Terrible shame, a great loss to music.
RIP Tom.
Cheers,
Neil.
If you're not already aware of it, have a look at 'The Breeze: An Appreciation Of JJ Cale' by Eric Clapton but with three songs with Petty.
"A man of little significance"
I saw him in 87, a great live performer. A big loss to the world of music.
I have to admit I seem to be the only one in the West never to have heard of him until his death was announced. I suppose back in the day I had heard of the Heartbreakers because it would have been on the News or something. Rock mostly leaves me cold, but sympathies to his family.
One of the greats, always good at putting a catchy tune together and such a distinctive sound.
