    Latest arrival (Ingenieur content)

One of the first watches that caught my eye when I was first afflicted with this watch obsession, was the IWC Ingenieur. The particular model for me was the 3227. I am a sucker for a textured dial so this drew me in straight away. Something about the harshness of the big slab of steel speaks to me. The precise angles and finish is just perfect imo. I've been keeping pics of it on my phone for years...

I had never had a chance to try one on though. There's an AD in my hometown but.since the 3227 is discontinued since roughly a decade it's not available. I did try the newer 3239 but found it too small for me. It's a great watch but not a statement piece.

Then an example showed up at a seller in my city. A guy I'd met and has great references. He'd obtained a close to unworn 3227 with all fixings. I had the chance to see it, handle it and just had to jump on the opportunity.

This features IWC's own 80110 auto movement, magnetically shielded (as should an Ingenieur) in a 41,5mm case. Bracelet is most excellent...

Enough ramblings and on the pics.

Some details (love that the font of the date window is the same as the markers)

And lastly on the wrist. Think that works

When these first came to my attention, my thoughts were overly preoccupied with wondering why they ditched the original Genta design. But once I stopped chewing on that, and looked at this on its own terms....ah yes :) In these retro obsessed days, I suppose it's not a surprise this solidly modern design has been discontinued? A shame though.

In relation to current IWC prices and specs, I think these are a real bargain

Have not commented on a post here for ages but could not resist commenting on what an absolute beauty this watch is. I am a bit of an IWC fan and tried one of these on a while ago. Very much wished I bought it but did not. Congratulations on getting this one !

It still has some Genta DNA I would say. At least they kept the bezel dots. I doubt he had the same reaction to this as to the AP RO offshore (if one is to believe the rumours)

Very nice. I'm rather fond of some of the older IWC's

But the 3227 remains my favourite

Indeed, but the lack of the soft iron cage holds it back. Unfortunately the 3227 is massively too large for my tiny wrist.

Always on the look out. They used to turn up regularly on SC but not so much lately.

There are a few on Chrono24 from European sellers, just under the £4,000 mark.

Fantastic! One of the last proper Ingenieurs before IWC went loopy and decided to mess with Genta's design. My 3227 AMG chrono says hi!

Is that the titanium one? I once saw a really beaten up one of those, and it still looked fantastic, a proper gnarled old beast.

Yes thats the one - i initially bought it on the bracelet and to be frank it wore terrible. Sucked up and bought the sailcloth ish strap from IWC and it transformed the watch.

One of my daily wearers - and also converted me to the oh so joys of Titanium. I truly struggle with steel now - the touch of Ti is just so much nicer.

Left to right it's IWC Big Pilot 5002, 3227, Mark X, Mark XI, Mark XII

The Mark X is one of the best of the issued WWW, or "Dirty Dozen", all dating from 1945. Powered by the IWC cal. 83 movement.

The mark XI dates from 1948, movement being cal. 89.

The mark XII is from about 2000 iirc. It has a JLC movement based on the JLC 889/2, modified by IWC & called the cal. 884.

Been toying with the idea of getting the sailcloth strap. I think it looks really good. (borrowed pic)

Not sure I would ever take this of the bracelet though.

I bought the Ingenieur because of the bracelet - IWC do some fantastic ones. But on the wrist - no micro adjustment and couldn't get it to sit properly. Plus it just looked too monotonous.

I shed a tear when forking over what I thought was way too much for the official strap (and what the heck, get the official buckle too...) but very, very happy. Build quality seems good too (was a concern that it would be a bit 'thin').

They apparently fray too soon around the case, due to the strap flexing. Hopefully yours doesn't suffer from that. If it does, there are superior aftermarket alternatives - all located in the EU.

Let's see - didn't know that but I'll complain to iwc if it does!

Out of interest I couldn't find these so called watch makers adapting to iwc. Could you list them here, be good as a reference :)

Thanks for the info,I would hold onto all of those if I was you.

The 3227 is destined to become a classic, if it's not already.

In-house movement, anti-mag, Genta designed, etc...it's a watch that appeals on so many levels.

And when IWC broke from the tradition...IMO, they have floundered since.

Off the top of my head there's Jacob straps in spain:
    http://forum.tz-uk.com/showthread.ph...-leather-strap
    https://www.fratellowatches.com/cust...trap-by-jacob/

    ABP does one as well:

I've seen others, but they were more one offs.

    Proper Ingenieur

Absolutely lovely Ingenieur from the good old days when an Ingenieur had a soft iron inner case like the original 666 and 866.
Lovely collection with two of my favorites: WWW and Mark 11.

As it happens, I've got my 3227 on the Kevlar strap at he moment. I've also got a Jacob strap on deployant, both purchased from a TZ UK member. I haven't used the Jacob & will probably put he 3227 back on the bracelet in the end because it must be one of the best bracelets there is on a watch.
