    One in Five

This is the devastating reality of childhood cancer.

1 in 5 children die within 5 years of a childhood cancer diagnosis.

    That's 20% of children that don't survive.
That's 250 children a day that cancer takes too soon.
That's not something anybody wants to see, but that we shouldn’t ignore.

Please help to improve these statistics by supporting charities like Cancer Research UK Kids & Teens and Gold Geese

    Many thanks, Ben.

It's worth remembering that whilst that headline statistic is very sad, the ratio has basically been reversed during the past 50 years thanks in no small part to the work of organisations such as Cancer Research UK who receive no Government funding. We want to see this trend continue all the way to zero!

We were reminded on Monday that Childhood Cancer Research is not just about finding effective treatments, but improving them and making them kinder on small bodies and with fewer side effects.

We were told that Laura, now thankfully in her second year of remission, will never fully recover from the damage to her nerve endings (peripheral neuropathy) caused by a particularly harsh chemotherapy medication called vincristine. Whilst this particular side effect has improved since her chemotherapy finished, the specialists believe that the recovery has now run its course.

She will always experience pain in her ankles and knees. She will never be able to walk very far without needing a break. She will always stumble on stairs and lean forward when running to stay balanced.

When treatment for childhood cancer is finished, it doesn't really mean it's all over. As the short term side effects fade, the long term and late effects take hold. Lifelong reminders of the impact of childhood cancer.
