Well I never knew we had a lady present.

The other two forums I visit (motorbike, u/water photography) both have a number of female members, so I don't know why I assumed I that this forum was all-male.

Re: "Sudden" Sub/SD mania here: Why?

If I had to have one watch it would be a Sub or SD.

My first memory is of Mike Nelson wearing one in Sea Hunt.

The reason I have an SD is that it came up at the right price at the right time. I would have enjoyed a Sub just as much. They have a wonderfully interesting inimitable history.

Like a fool I sold my 5513 years ago and now they are right up there price wise. :( So I bought a Tudor Sub which gives me a bit of the tritium flavour and clanky bracelet of my old 5513.

It's not the same but..... :?

They are indeed wearable on a female wrist. There's a lunch restaurant not too far from where I work run by two sisters. It's not health food, but it's definitely healthy food and both of them are slim, slender girls. One of them wears a full-sized Rolex Sub (or copy; I've had to stop myself from staring at her wrist when ordering! How sad is that!?). She wears it rather loose and it looks great. Kinda sexy, even.
I see the same thing out here too Martin, I've seen many slim female Swede's wearing Subs, Explorers, DJ's & GMT's .. & it's rather sad to notice the watch before the hot blonde!

Re: "Sudden" Sub/SD mania here: Why?

I think the decision to drop the current SD and the hype around the new DSSD have helped push them into the limelight. That causes us to post pictures and that in turn presses the "I want one" button in many WISs. In my view, the Sub date is indeed a design icon and will always be popular, whereas the SD is it's somewhat chunkier and more exclusive brother.

Let's see what happens to the demand / price of the SD in the next couple of years when people realise they can't get hold of a DSSD and they'd like a SD instead.

Oi what is the problem. After the Dreadnought I think the next definitive divers classic watch has to be the submariner weather it has a date or not. I would be happy to own either or both. So what is the big deal. I would love a seadwellor as well. But I unfortunately only own a sub date as the moment.
    That is my humble opinion.

I was deciding between this & another Rolex. Advised to get SD first as value likely to go up. Thought about non date Sub.

Really like it-change not to have Cyclops. There are a just a few Rollies I not had now-and can't afford them. 'Trying' to calm down now & just have a couple of watches. See how it goes.

Yesterday, for a split sec, I thought I saw the new DS (in action) but the flat crystal soon showed it to be the new GMT ... which send me into hours long contemplation between the original GMTs 1+2 and the current offering ... :D

I hope you haven't seen any, it's a project. This should silence those who say I only make copies, although no doubt Jacques Etoile will produce a napkin sketch of one he made for the Armenian navy in 1963.

Re: "Sudden" Sub/SD mania here: Why?

The anti-Rolex sentiment makes no sense at all. Say what you will about the prices, the styles (or lack thereof) but they sell everything that they make. Is that simply marketing? For part of it, yes, it is. It's like the diamond market-diamonds are not particularly rare, but the supply is well controlled, and every (American at least) man is expected to buy a sizable one for his bride to be. Thus, the price goes up.

With Rolex, they have a well-earned reputation for quality, and up 'till recently, service. You knew that if you bought a Rolex, you could expect it to serve a lifetime, look good while doing it, and also be able to be resold with minimal loss, if any. That still holds true, which is fairly rare in the WIS world.

Yes, I know that there are plenty, plenty of better deals in the watch world, but that doesn't diminish or negate Rolex's role.

I bought one because I liked it, had wanted one much of my life, and I wanted to see what the fuss was about. Once I got my SD, I quickly realized what it was-it was a well made watch, beautifully put together, tough, and accurate. I put it on, and forgot that I was wearing it for much of the time. I changed oil on a car, worked on my bicycle, cooked dinner, and went out to parties, not ever thinking about the watch. It went everywhere, and went with everything. If people noticed it, and thought something of me because of it, it was their problem, not mine, and not my watch's.

I suspect that many of the naysayers have never owned a Rolex, and if they have, then they're entitled to their opinion. It's ridiculous to me to see these constant comparison posts, as if people are trying to prove that they've found the watch to beat Rolex, and that Rolex owners are a bunch of poseurs if they don't realize that.

I do agree with you Chris, especially people judging you by the watch you wear. I wear my watches because I like them, and for my pleasure, not for others to keep noticing it and then making a judgement about me based on it. If they do, as you say, its their problem.

I dont have a Rolex; but definitely would buy one as soon as I can put my funds together.

And if Rolex is not a very good watch, how come it manages to preserve its value so well across all its models. Surely all of it is not marketing- people are not completely stupid.

For other watches to be of good quality it is not necessary for Rolex to be a bad one

I can't show you any more because this is an original design and if I revealed it now, Ray would have them on eBay next week.
The pic looks intriguing .. but hopefully we'll not have too long to wait to see it in all it's glory!

Re: "Sudden" Sub/SD mania here: Why?

Nice tease Eddie! Can't wait to see more...

Back to Rolex - bought mine because of the history, the quality and the style. Actually, bought a 50th Anniversary edition - the LV - as I liked it more - saw it on a web-site somewhere after years in the watch wilderness and all of a sudden, BANG!!!, I was back and the hunt for the LV was on...

Would like to get a regular Sub-date or no-date but would go for a SD if the chance came up and funds were to hand - not a set of things that are likely to happen together I'm afraid.

    Cheers

    +1

... tho I think Armenia is land bound and probably doesn't have a Navy.

    Your right John,

The only thing Armenian, and Navy is the Armenian Navy Band.

I think we reached the same conclusion there. They have a lovely lake tho, lake Sevan. And to those who are interested Armenia is the birthplace of Xtianity.

And has the oldest stone circles known to man. Pretty important place really.
