I wanted to read the Quill and Pad article to see if there was anything beyond the clickbait headline, but my eyes kept getting bogged down in the author's self-indulgence. Does he have a fair point?
Khanjar And Qaboos Rolexes: Are They The Vintage Watch Industry’s Blood Diamonds?

"The SAS contingent that had been engaged in the conflict from the time of the coup amounted to around 80 men (supported by Oman locals). The insurgents had numbered almost 15,000, a staggering achievement." [quote]
Below more details of the battle.

This just open's the flood gate's for all the Walts in Walter Mitty land to go and buy one.
A very in-depth not to mention involved article, but it seems to me the author would be more suited to a Tudor Submariner...of the snowflake variety!
For a first hand account of the 'battle of Mirbat' I can recommend SAS Operation Storm co-authored by Roger Cole, one of the participants.
My curiosity pricked by this thread, I picked up a copy from the local library and it made for a welcome post Christmas distraction. It's not exactly The Seven Pillars of Wisdom but an engaging read nonetheless. No mention of any watches though.
To add a small footnote. Sultan Qaboos, who allegedly awarded these watches, has now passed away.

Nothing too special about these watches, exception of the fact they are Rolex and were commissioned by the now deceased Sultan.
And that they’re worth about £100k
Nothing special
???? The article says that one sold for 10 times that, that's a dramatic depreciation!
Interesting that the article ends with a foot note with a former SAS man saying no-one was given a Rolex for service in Oman. Sounds like it may well just be another Rolex myth that people are happy to believe.
I'm rather surprised no-one's claimed a Rolex was the first watch on Mars yet
