    Rolex Comex Sub on ebay

    Guys,
Thought you'd be interested in this one. I don`t know much about vintage Subs and values etc. but I know COMEX = big money.

I also know that the replacement dial = less money (but still big?)

Look forward to reading comments from the Rolex experts out there!

Errm sorry buts whats wrong with a 5514 WG, thats a prefcetly good and correct watch wearing a WG service logo dial, as very many of them do. these were tool watches that were actual used ( often failed) and were regulalry serviced and had parts repalced, some 5514 were also shipped with non logo dials and they were ' upgraded with a logo dial at service for the company.

With a matt logo dial 5514 being around the £80k mark that seems fairly Ok for a logo service dial, and It has been owned previously by someone i know who had it checked out fully with RolexUK.

That actual watch sold at sothebys a few weeks ago for circa £32k and was reasonably priced.

That's fightin' talk to your avg Rolex purist-fetishist :)

Of course, any fundamentalist collector wanting to pick up a watch like this in fab condition with a service replacement Rolex dial and replace the dial with something original, dirty and buggered could offer fifty quid for the parts I suppose. I mean the case has to be worth that at least.
...but what do I know; I don't even like watches!

its wierd thats fighting talk in respect of pretty much everything EXCEPT the Rolex comex world, where people are happy to accept service parts on a watch as long as the price point is correct, i.e. dont try and sell that at matt logo dial money :)

As an aside, £20 shipping for a £38K watch  No courier i know and use would cover the value for £20 :?

Hmm... DesIrae just called that watch "shit". eBay is full of people hawking hang tags for $1,000; $0.01 plastic anchors for $500. Yes, everything has its price but can you really say that other brands elicit more emotional responses amongst the purists than Rolex?

    I'm not sure i follow,

the point I was making is that yes a replacment dial would normally be frowned on in the Rolex world, but when it comes to Comex, they are strangely more acceptable.

Glad I flagged this up now......keep the comments coming, guys!

    Matt-dials and £80K price-tags.......... I just don`t get it.

Kings new clothes syndrome? They're just sruffy old dive watches and I just can`t see how the massive prices are justified. Maybe I`m a philistine but if I really wanted a Sub I`d rather have a new one and save £35K!

The watch is not an original 1972.

The Dial is not correct for a 1972...they didnt have white gold around the lume.

The Dial looks like one of 1980's Comex, but they are heavily faked.

Granted, but such comments do not give much of a 'feelgood' factor about the seller

Yes, I did read it was a replacement.

However, he does not show the paperwork proving it was replaced.

If it is real, then you can knock off ¾ of the price he is asking, and he should (or someone should) have kept the 1972 Dial.

All we have is a photo of the front of the watch, and nothing else.

I am not new to collecting COMEX Watches, ask David GraniteQuarry.

    Regards,

    John

Re: Rolex Comex Sub on ebay

never said you were new to collecting Comex, but if you think you can buy any comex even with a service dial for £9.5k then you arent following current Comex pricing. The watch is £30k all day long, but i'll take ten if you can find them at £9.5k :)

this guy has bought at auction and is trying to flip a quick £5-6k profit though he started off at £44k.

the 72 dial, as its an early small numbers batch, will orignilaly most likely come with a non logo bog standard 5513 type dial, the vast majority of which have been swapped out to either tritium or luminova service dials, done by Rolex on behalf of Comex as they wanted their watches to bear their logo, or by rolex on behalf of a dealer or collector, the last service dial came out of Bexley about 3 years ago and is currently sitting in a friend of mines watch, up until then they were readily available to anyone at service for about £100.

the watch probably isnt from 72, but most of these caserback with the rolex comex engraving on the 5514 bear the i.72 datestamp even though they werent built till a bit later (73/74).

NO one in their right mind should or would show off their caseback on a public site, like the milsubs its just not done. Imagine dropping £80k on a watch just to have a clone of it turn up, even it was bad fake you'd still be pretty upset !! Though i'm sure in his first couple of attempts to list it , he had more info up.

I misread it and thought it was £48,000…instead of £38,000.

Here in the US, you can pick up a very nice COMEX like this in the range of $20,000 to $25,000.00.

I recently assisted Dave in picking up two very nice Original Vintage Rolex Subs.

You just have to know where to look…

In that case and in all seriousness, if you can find any Comex in that price range I'll very seriously take them off you at a profit.

    Indeed

To take a 'purist' attitude with Comex watches seriously narrows your opportunities - as Jed stated, the watches generally were used in a harsh environment etc. but were serviced well.

In the manner of Trigger's spade - as original but with 3 new handles....

I love these Comex discussions! Scary prices indeed, but what else can you expect for the rarest of an already iconic watch? Only 700 or so supplied to Comex if i recall the facts correctly, supply vs. demand mateys, such is life

John, i WILL get you to part with yours one day buddy!

Anyway, great to see two experts commenting here - John and Jed, your knowledge of these watches is never in doubt :D

I do not due business like that. I acquire them for collectors who will not sell them, and I don't sell them at a profit. Friends get it for what I can, and they pay the seller direct. I just make sure they get overseas without Duties and VAT.

Re: Rolex Comex Sub on ebay

    I'm in Liverpool.

I am not the current vendor of the eBay Comex. I was pursuaded by a London based collector to sell the watch to him in 2003, and I submitted the watch to Rolex Bexley for overhaul as part of the sale. He subsequently traded the watch, and it was sold at Sothebys earlier this year. I'm not in touch with the eBay seller, but it's my old watch...

Some jolly nice Subs there Jed! I should bring them out to play more often!

I was only looking through his shop window a couple of hours ago. He's based in southport.

On the above site click on ROLEX and then scroll down to the bottom MUSEUM COLLECTION link, but make sure you have some Kleenex handy !!

    What a shrine!

It's just missing some skulls and candles to finish it off

Seriously, that is one IMPRESSIVE collection.

    Thanks for the pics

The skulls and candles are in another collection, pictured elsewhere

Really enjoyed reading the comments and seeing Mikes collection. Knew this thread would be interesting, glad I kicked it off now.

Hope I`m forgiven for my 'scruffy old dive watch' comments earlier!
