This is all such a shame. I’ve got an L322 Westminster that I use for towing and it’s peerless. It’s even reliable. I have also been thinking about getting a 2015/6 Autobiography, mainly because the satnav/operating system thing is rubbish. But this thread has caused a little worm of doubt to start burrowing around in my mind. Maybe a Merc would be a better bet.

I agree with Ian, in life we all have to make our own choices.

Indeed, only the bad experiences get the big publicity.

No worries. Even if it breaks down it still looks great on the drive. How’s the Germanic brick?

I’ve had a couple of Evoques - the first on a 13 plate and my current one on a 66. Only glitch in 7 years was a dodgy interior light. Cheap servicing (service plan £500 for 5 years) and excellent residuals. And my local dealer (Roger Young in Cornwall) is about as far from faceless corporate entity as it is could be.
Perhaps I’ve been lucky - but I shall be having another (or perhaps an F Pace) in the new year.

Had a 16 plate Evoque from new and thought it was a great car. Comfortable and handled well for a suv. Great looking motor as well. Went to test drive a Disco Sport and the salesman said while you’re here why not try an Evoque. No comparison, got back to the dealers and ordered one. Traded it for an E-Pace in 2018 and even though I liked the E-Pace I did regret losing the Evoque. Was going to get the new Evoque but didn’t like the touchscreen dashboard controls, like trying to use an I-Pad while driving, hence the F-Pace.

Lot of comments on here from folk who know someone who had a bad experience. Always a bit of schadenfreude when someone’s spent a lot on something and it’s gone wrong. I owned a disco 3 (4 years old when I bought it) couple of issues but nothing major, currently have a disco 4 only thing I’ve done is had the ac recharged. Off to look at a disco 5 tomorrow. I had Saab’s and Mercs which were issue after issue, yet people kept telling me how reliable those brands where (yes Saab has gone but I had them years ago). With any car, drive it, see if you like it, buy if you can afford it and get a warranty.

Similar situation for me. I’ve owned a 2013 Disco 4 now for almost 4 years, approved used from a dealer. A couple of minor items were sorted during the warranty period but nothing major went wrong, other than that it’s been faultless until last week.

The left hand inlet manifold cracked so it went into restricted performance mode. Cracked manifolds are not unheard of on the 3.0 diesel. However, it’s done nearly 95,000 miles and it’s 7 years old, I expect stuff to go wrong on any vehicle, particularly a highly complex one like a 4x4.

My experience of LR dealers is not great, the few I’ve used were useless although that’s not specific to LR, most franchised dealerships for most brands I’ve had were just as crap.

A good independent LR specialist like FFF are worth their weight in gold, find one of these to look after your vehicle rather than a main dealer unless you’re tied in in some way. You will get a better service from someone who will have some passion for the brand and you’ll save some money.

My nearest indy (4x4 Developments) had the manifold replaced in a couple of days, cost about £780 all in. All my service work will be done here from now on. If I’d taken it to my dearest main dealer they would have taken longer and charged me a lot more.

As for other brands being more reliable my experience would suggest otherwise, I’ve had more reliability problems with VW’s, Skoda’s, Alfa’s, Citroen, etc. than with the Disco, and that includes owning a Land Cruiser for a while. The Cruiser was great but it let me down a couple of times and to drive on the road the Disco is way better. If a Land Cruiser does go wrong get ready for some major bills, parts are not exactly cheap!

I love my LR, so does my wife surprisingly and so do the kids. It’s all the car you could ever need. When I eventually need to replace it I’d happily have another, they get under your skin. Can’t say that about my year old VW Passat (company car), boring as hell, just a metal box on wheels, I have no emotional connection to it at all.
