    Shouldn't that really be:

"possibility of greater return or loss potential"

Anyone considering Alibaba on the NYSE to get exposure for the Ant group IPO. Seems the easiest way to buy in ?

Buying shares in a Cayman entity with no real ownership in and no corporate governance over the main company under the control of the Chinese government. What could possibly go wrong?

Lockdown and all the guns in America being bought doesn't seem to have spooked them yet

What happened to the markets? Thought it was supposed to be heavily down today.

    Massive stimulus expected now?

I've heard there is some kind of 'poll' going on in the US that may determine what and when the stimulus happens.

No idea why the FTSE is up nearly 1% but I'm using it as a bit of a bonus to cash out many of my holdings and ride out the next few weeks. I have no intuition as to whether stocks will go up massively or down massively over the next couple of months (but it does feel like Covid is winning at present) and so I'll try and retreat with as much of my shirt as possible and wait and see what happens. I'll leave precious metals in play and some of my 'Hail Mary' stakes in place (Vela Technologies, Alien Metals, Kibo Energy - all of which I was told by people 'in the know' were going to 'moon' and which to date have an average loss of 35%). I'll keep drip feeding into the index trackers also.

What I have found out about my own investing style is that whenever I have decided I 'know best' and go after individual stocks I have gotten hammered. WIll stick to index trackers and the odd investment fund moving forward. Seems like investment professionals do know more than me after all. Who'd have thought! :)

Wasn't expecting UK markets to climb today ...

US elections seem like a lottery to me and it's hard to work out what next ...

The worst news I would expect would be a slim Biden win and a Trump refusal to go ...

I assume the markets are pricing in a Biden win.

  17. #3617
Yes I think so, although I doubt Trump will refuse to go but he may ask for lengthy postal recounts if it's close

Thoughts on why Amazon continues to tank? Surely further lockdowns are a perfect storm for Bezos?

I bought some Hipgnosis shares last week. They're down slightly but at least now every time I hear "All I want for Christmas" playing on the tv/radio I know i'll be getting a tiny fraction of the money.

Can you quantify that? What does that statement mean part from expressing bearish feelings.

Any key metrics or benchmarks that make you feel that way?

    No.

Just a hunch from an old hand. I may be wrong, but what I see is recovery attempts failing mid morning and lots of selling in the rallye leaders.

    Yeah true.

I think I'll buy some more Amazon. Can't fathom why it has dropped so much the past few days and there is rumours a stock split is on the cards also (pretty hard to incentivise employees with stock when each share is $3k)

In which world is a potential stock split reason to buy a stock?

Because at $3k a share currently it may be too expensive for smaller investors. Providing a cheaper point of entry may provide greater marketability and liquidity in the market for Amazon stock (again in particular for smaller investors). It won't increase market cap per se of course but may encourage more investment in the stock.

Maybe you should be client at a broker which caters for your needs? Plenty of alternatives available.

And anyway. all retail buying from the UK combined doesn't add up to more than a wee in the Mississippi in terms of global flows.

Currently there are 3 very negative areas affecting markets and they have been for a while now, Covid - Trump - Brexit, in the next few months it could easily be Vaccine - Biden - Trade agreement, these positives are now a close possibility unlike when we had the first wave of CV.

In the above scenario how do we expect that to affect markets and by how much?

Why would a Biden win be better for the stock market (and why is Trump bad for the markets) ?

Whether you like Trump or not,Trump sees the stock market as a barometer of his success & The USA doing well, so has pursuing policies that have led to large increases in US equities.

Biden and Harris have both said they will increase corporate taxation, so companies will be less profitable. A significant factor in the US stock market increase since 2016 has been Trump cutting corporate tax hence bigger profits and stock prices increase.

Biden's less right leanings mean more social policies and bailing out economy (more QE) which filters into greater spending.

I think the "Red Mirage" scenario will play out and a less clear cut or fast victory for Biden would mean ongoing uncertainty and falls into the week.

If Trump wins, there will also be a stimulus package.

The Republicans wanted to pass a 1.7 trillion dollar stimulus and the Democrats wanted 2.1 trillion, they couldn’t agree hence it was delayed, it’s mind boggling numbers !!

Trump won't win. The markets are excited about a big enough Biden win to get Trump out quickly.
