...police dog shot multiple times...:
...Roscoe was part of the Massachusetts State Police Bomb Squad and deployed on March 6 in a Barnstable house after police were fired upon. Police sent in two other robots often used for bomb disposal into the house to find the suspect along with the robotic dog.
Controlled remotely by state troopers, it first checked the two main floors before finding someone in the basement. The person, armed with a rifle, twice knocked over the robotic dog before shooting it three times and disabling its communication.
The person then shot at one of the other robots and an outdoor swimming pool before police deployed tear gas and arrested them...
Boston Dynamics has an Ethical Approach:
...Adding weapons to robots that are widely available to the public and capable of navigating in locations where people live and work raises both serious risks of harm and ethical objections. In response, we have spearheaded a coalition of industry leaders spanning six companies and three continents in pledging not to weaponize our robots or the software that enables their use...
How well that will hold up is yet to be seen. Especially in countries like Russia and the USA (were there has been a considerable effort to circumvent the drug companies' ban on supplying products to be used for lethal injections).
Pop an AI brain into one (or remote connect) and things will start to get very Azimov indeed. The next couple of decades are going to be interesting, to say the least.
I imagine some clever legal definitions, perhaps gerrymandering a ''warzone'' exclusion will circumvent this bump in the road, the invocation of national security interests, only a matter of time..that is if DARPA aren't already on it, working on getting robot boots on the ground.
