    watch obsession outa control?

At 27 i could have a million other hobbies and interests, dont get me wrong i like a game of squash, porn, go out with the lads etc.. but my MAIN (along with porn) interest by far is watches, i find myself a little obsessed at times which from an outsiders point of view can be quite strange  but i think i find guys making a renault clio looking like something that has been magnetised and ram raided halfords quite weird :D no offence to any boyracers on here :bom:

Im proud to be a watch obsessive but does anyone sometimes feel were judged by the non WIS and think we a little odd?

    cheers

I think the nice thing about being a watch obsessive is it's not obvious (unlike the Max Power boy racers!)

Most people don't notice unless you want to tell them.

I think the other nice thing about it is that unlike spending £5,000 on crap for a Clio that has zero resale value and probably makes the car worth less, at least with well chosen watches (particularly bought used) you can normally turn them back into most of the cash you've spent.

I know my wife things I'm a little (ok, very ) odd. She can't understand my fascination with watches, and certainly finds it amusing when I start up conversations with strangers who happen to be wearing an unusual watch.

But I know she loves me really :D

Ditto that. My wife asked me the other day "All you do is look at watches. Why can't you just surf the web for porn like any other guy?"

And yes, she loves me, too.

I agree Alex. I am only 30 so relatively young as well. My friends and family do think I'm rather obsessive about watches but if i am out with them i don't constantly bring the subject up. I equate it to the car thing as well. Some of my mates love cars, if they buy a watch magazine its normal, i buy a watch magazine I'm obsessed  My wife is a watch widow though

    Re: watch obsession outa control?

Had an SMP for 6 years before really getting into watches, so feels like I am playing catch up now.

Along with the others, my wife still loves me and thinks I am totally obsessed, but unlike a couple mentioned, doesn't mind if I'm not surfing for porn.

The guys at work think I am a little insane having 9 watches (8 now one has been sold) and changing them every couple of days but they are becoming used to it now and not quite so surprised when come in off rest days with another new watch (well new to me).

And also like Toshi, I have started conversations with total strangers who are wearing a nice watch and frequently look at them in the pub, shops etc to see what people are wearing.

We are totally out of control and there is no hope for us........................long may it continue

I spend hours looking at watches, but my obsession is known only by either liked minded people or people that I tell .. as has been said, it's not an obvious affliction.

It's just a default in the brain........but not to big a mistake in this case, good natured, and costing you a little money.
But it for sure is rewarding sometimes :D .
And what others think........couldn't care less.

    Cheers,

My biggest symptom of WISdom is that I have this irresistible urge to straighten dive bezels that are not set at "12". There have been several occasions (one very memorable which I won't go into  ) when I've introduced myself to complete strangers with the sole intention of getting them to straighten their bezel (because it's been driving me crazy  ). At this stage my wife normally starts appologising for me and looking to the heavens. Can't help myself :D

Nah, there are worse things by far to spend your time and money on. My wife isn't always happy with me for it, but not seriously so. I get a bit of mild ribbing from the people who know I'm into watches, but that's probably balanced out by people asking for advice when they've got watch related things they need to think about. Enjoy it, you're not hurting anyone you know!

It's not an obsession (and even if it was it's not out of control - okay, maybe just a bit  )

    Re: watch obsession outa control?

Total obsession - there aren't many things I spend my money on - well there isn't much left after spending it all on watches - I have toyed with the idea of selling them all and beign mortgage free - but I think I'd be a wreck and spend twice as much trying to buy them all back :( I'm a lost cause - but there is a certain sense of safety in numbers with like minded folk - better here then all locked up in the sanitorium!
It's just a matter of time...

Yep, hands up I am mental!

I'm 39, and whilst I sort of like cars, I don't think they're a sensible thing to get excited about, particularly in London, with speed bumps, speed cameras, cost of petrol, little sods who like to 'key' parked cars, road tax, the congestion charge....

Hang on, I'm not mental after all! - I never got fined for my watch running too fast...............and show me a watch that runs on fossil fuel

Mind you, I may fit a spoiler to the cyclops on my sub....... :)

I was in a pub with a mate, and wanted to show him my new Sony Reader e-book thingy...

Me (reaching into my jacket): "Tom, you've got to see this, it's really cool."
    Tom: "Is it a watch?"
    Me: "Um, no."
    Tom: "That makes a change."

I think my mates think I'm obsessed or something.

OMG  I feel better somone else does that

I was watching a programme yesterday and swore blind i had saw one of Eddies SB3's. The only difference was it had pointed tips on the hands. I considered leaving it on pause, placing a memory stick in the telly, taking a pic and uploading it here but thought I'd get grief for watching cash in the celebrity head to head antique road show challenge.....oppps

I did it, here it is courtesy of BBCi

Two thoughts on this, why do not our wives who like there bags, rings, shoes, bangles, and need a new outfit almost to every time you’re invited out think all these things are reasonable. But buy the odd watch hear and they’re is obsessive?

Interestingly my friends and family do rib me about my watches for example what watch have you got on today type stuff? However when they want to buy a watch as a present , or for themselves its often me they come to for advice.

    Re: watch obsession outa control?

Not sure when it passes from 'healthy interesting hobby' to 'outa control'?

My collection numbers 22 at the moment, some I`m planning to sell in the future but most are for keeping. I have to buy twice as many because I like steel watches and 2-tones, so I end up getting both versions of a model I like. There are gaps in the collection which ought to be filled and when I see the right watch at the right price I buy it. Sometimes I fight the urge and it passes...but it usually returns. I like to buy stuff at a price I can get back if I decide to sell, and I generally won`t be swayed from this rule although I have broken it a couple of times. That's my current watch philosophy and I think it's perfectly rational.

I guess it reaches 'outa control' when you end up buying stuff on impulse and spending more than you can afford.....or buying another watch (which isn`t needed) instead of something you really do need?

I get some stick from the lady because I`d rather spend an hour looking at watches on the internet (or wittering to you guys on here) whilst listening to music & drinking beer, than watch some banal crap on the TV with her. That's simply a rational response in my view, but she interptrets it as 'watch obsession'.......strange!

IMHO I do think one of the points we miss when we worry about an obsession is that we do also enjoy talking about it, and just looking at watches. If we bought everything we liked, well then we'd have a dangerous obsession!

    Agreed!

Plus, I've said a similar thing before on here but I think what people forget is that no-one is really truly 'utilitarian' insofar as they don't buy 'silly' luxury items. Everyone does in today's society! Just look aroud, who really just buys what is needed?!

Buying cars is the one that gets me. I had a mate who bought a lovely Beamer - on Hire Purchase no less! - then prompted to mock the fact I had just bought my second 'posh' watch (the Breitling I since sold to Alex  ) because "it just tells the time". But, there is no 'rational' reason why his car was any better than a Fiesta for 1/3 the price. Or, errr, a bike!

Actually, a more interesting anecdote is when I bumped into an academic colleague - a proper lefty 'no logo' type - who nearly pooed his pants when I found him eyeing up some flash jeans in the Levis shop in the Trafford Centre - he couldn't escape my wife and I fast enough

My wife was a nice example. She never bloody wants anything - she is so smug about it! Buying presents is a total swine - she "can get by". BUT, then she sees a shot of a SuperOcean (both old and new) with an orange dial...and mumbles "I'd like one of them". :D

    Re: watch obsession outa control?

Was approached at work today by a colleague who wants to buy a nice watch and wants to spend around £1K and he asked for my advice.

    A nice side-effect of the obession :?:

Anyway, have gave him lots to think about, and when he has decided a few things, will give him a few more things to think about. Have told him that if he only has the one watch (which will not be worn on duty - front line cop so wouldn't wear it on patrol) then he has to be sure of what style, what features he wants etc etc.

Felt really good to be approached and trusted to steer him in the right direction in the first instance and to be there to give him further advice and opinions as the time of purchase approaches.

I'm 29 and have been obsessed since I got my first Swatch aged about 5. I spend far too much on watches, I surf the net and visit this site multiple times per day. My fiancee hates it...see's this as a real negative to my personality.

To sum up, I am obsessed too! Then again I'm sure there are worse things to be obsessed about. 8)
