What happened to can openers. Mumsnet content.

For some time now I've been going through can openers like never before. In the past we've had them years and they just seemed to work. Not a complicated item after all. Recently they just seem to give up working.

From the couple of quid butterfly type to more expensive ones they seem to start well and then give up after a week or two!

Are there unseen forces at work or am I missing something. I'm thinking of trying the old stab and cut type soon in desperation.
Started out with nothing. Still have most of it left.

I do not know about quality , but when ours broke we moved to a new version that you had to preset horizontally to the can with the blade on outside . Every time my other half opens a can now , she gets it wrong way round and butchers the can and tells me the opener is broken :)

Does anyone still use hand openers?

I would assume you need to keep the blade sharp. Slicing through steel is apt to dull it

Although I've never sharpened an electric one

Nothing cheap about Sainsburys Salmon mate.

We have gone over to the Culinare battery-operated electric one. Marvellous, just keep a couple of recharged batteries on standby.

I have seen some nasty cuts involving can opening in my time.

‘Oxo’ can openers are the best manual ones I've found thus far.

(I seriously cannot believe I’ve thought myself knowledgeable enough to reply to a ‘can opener’ thread on a watch forum ffs..!)

Anyways - can openers that don't work as they should twizzle my fizzle.

Remember the hand ones that you had to hack around the outside of the can lid to give a really rough edge?

I think part of the problem is that the can material is more pliable now .. more apt to 'give' than to cut.

I'm thinking that way just to give the cans a bit of stick.

I wondered if they were made differently/more cheaply.

Those ring-pull cans are all very well until the ring snaps off and the fancy tin with no ridged edges means that your new-fangled can opener can't get a grip so you end up having to chuck a perfectly good tin of grub in the bin, which was what happened to me this very lunchtime with a tin of Tesco Finest sardines (in brine, IIRC). Thinking about it now, I'm still angry!

I went through this a few years ago, trusty old can opener broke. Couldn't believe how terrible replacement was. Tried a few and eventually got to the Oxo Good Grips ones, it's still going strong 3 years later and I use it almost daily.

You cannot beat the can openers that came in military ration packs.

We’ve got one of those - works well when you know how to use it. Always looks like it hasn’t cut through but it has!

Father in law bought me a Sabitier Professional about 10 years ago and it's still good as new after constant use.

He has a knack for buying quality kitchen kit – my favourite steamer set and garlic press were presents from him as well.

Tried two very similar and neither worked properly. Most of them are cheaply made rubbish.

We’ve got a drawer full as each time one of the kids has a problem opening a can they get into Amazon and buy a new one. Last purchased has a removable/replaceable blade as my son pointed out but God knows where you’d get a replacement from as it didn’t come with one and he has no idea.

^ No idea what you’re doing with them then. I’ve had the above model for 10+ years and never a problem, and I use it every few days.

Use your penknife or GraniteQuarry's WTSHTF method which you can find demonstrated on Youtube.

Try using a hand turn one when you’re left handed- takes the whole top of the tin off.

We've got what is probably an original Culinare Magican. Still works like new. Plastic is a bit discoloured now but I generally just bung it in the dishwasher to clean it which probably does not help that. The current models are cheap anyway so you won't lose much by trying one.

We've got a free standing electrical job that we have had for 20 years at least.

It's gone cream from white over time but it always does the job first time.
    Cheers,

I’ve got a manual Ikea one purchased 11ish years ago it’s still going well. I have to be honest though and say that majority of tins I buy are rose with a ring pull!

On a similar vein, don’t get me started on those cellophane lids you get on prepacked foods as they seem to just rip off at the first touch!

Well here we go. Decided to try one of these.

So far so good. Takes the lid off without leaving any sharp edges. Handy if you want a tin for cleaning brushes or storing screws etc in the garage/workshop. (as it happens I don't as I have enough stuff in there already!)
Started out with nothing. Still have most of it left.

I always buy Leifheit, for me and for others I see using inferior openers!
