    painting plug sockets

    Hi peeps,

We have just wallpapered a feature wall with a mural and now the white sockets stand out like a ruddy sore thumb.
Has anyone got advice on how we can colour them in - can we just paint them?

    Ta

Could you use adhesive backed vinyl in a similar or contrasting pattern. By doing this should you want to re decorate in the future you can just peel away the vinyl.

Lots of small pieces of vinyl wraps on e bay.

Can you replace the sockets with coloured sockets?

I did see various coloured sockets in a shop might have been homebase as we moved ours to a dark brushed metal finish last year.

I'd buy new sockets in a suitable colour if it's just one wall.

Rough them up and spray them

I think they'd be so susceptible to the paint chipping off every time you plugged something in that I'd just swap them for some coloured or metal ones.

You thought about going for a neutral earth colour?

If you're going to paint them you'd be wise to remove them, and if you're going to that effort it's probably easier just to buy replacement ones in a colour that suits.

Yes, you can paint them - acrylic paint if your going to get artistic with a brush, or plasticote spray - that sticks to anything

    Get your screwdrivers ready,
Check that the socket does go dead when you trip the MCB that you ‘think’ is the right one. (Plugging in a light)
    Release the socket plate.
Check again, the conductors to the plate (with a voltmeter)
Take a photo of the cable layout.
Release the cables from the plate.

Plate on the flat on top of newspaper.
    Treat with plastic etching.
cut small rectangles of tape to go over the 6 pin holes (just need to be very slightly larger) or make minimal plugs with blu-tac or playdoh.
Spray with the paint colour you want, taking care not to over-spray the gap around the switch rockers. (I’d leave the switch OFF to keep the white/red indicator showing).

Leave to dry - and re-apply.

In the interim - you could reconnect the cable tails using choc-block strip to maintain the ring-circuit.

ALTERNATIVELY: Buy a new one and treat/spray it ahead of swapping out plates.

I would take great care with this stage. I would be very concerned about getting anything in the socket pin holes as it could mess up the shutter action (moving plastic part) that cover and protect against live parts.

I dare say that you could walk into just about any home in the land, and find normal emulsion paint adhering tenaciously to power sockets and light switches.
