Believe it or not I have never seen a professional baseball game. Must go back to my childhood in little league and getting hit in the nuts by a line drive. Have never played or watch anyone play it since.
The Philadelphia Phillies have just won the World Series - a big deal for them and their first since 1980. When I lived outside Philly for some years in the 1980s I became surprisingly fond of baseball. As a day out a visit to the old Veterans Stadium was great fun - even my wife and children (my son still watches baseball on 5 as I do) enjoyed it. From the vilest Philadelphia Cheesesteaks served anywhere in Pennsylvania, to the fabled seventh innings stretch I enjoyed it all. What still amazes me is that visiting friends who could cheerfully sit through a five day cricket test match often observed that the ball game was too long. As I got to know the game better I began to appreciate the enormous amount of skill and subtlety involved - not quite cricket of course but still :)

I love cricket, but cannot get into baseball. Have seen the NY Mets a couple of times when I've visited NYC, but more for the atmosphere than the game. Although I'm not a fan, I'll not deny that there's a lot of skill involved (just like any other sport).

Its only the title that irks me somewhat

Which countries take part in The World Series?

Where I come from that game is played by girls, only they call it rounders and they make it harder by using a smaller bat, a smaller ball and there's no artificial wall so they can be caught any distance they care to try to hit it.

I'd hate to be with you when you're on your own.

When I was in Philly back in the Summer I went to my first and only ballgame. Watched the Phillies get flogged by the Marlins. I couldn't get over how good the food was compared to the crap you get served at Premiership football games. Quite enjoyed the baseball too - but its better on TV.Originally Posted by Rinaldo1711

That said I stayed up to watch the World Series, and always try to take in a game or two when I'm in the USA.
My advice would be to get a good seat and catch sight of a perfectly timed and executed "double play" before you judge the game.
I'm rather shocked to hear that some of you like baseball. I always thought it was a game you had to grow up watching to appreciate. I think it's a great game and I go to as many Detroit Tigers games as I can. I went to six games this past season and I'd go to more if I could. It isn't the most popular sport here any more and today's youth aren't as interested as previous generations. It's not a fast paced game and I don't think kids have the attention span for it any more.
thought it was called "world series" after the paper that sponsored the original competition way back when...
Unfortunately, that is not true. I think "World Series" was chosen because of how huge it sounded. The AL NL Championship Series just doesn't sound as grand as The World Series of Baseball. It is almost fitting now that we have players from US, Canada, Venezuela, The Dominican Republic, Cuba, Japan, Korea, etc.Originally Posted by bigbaddes

I'm currently holding discussions to hold the Nipsy World Series in Sheffield next year.

OK. Pardon another dumb question from a "Yank", but "Nipsy"?Originally Posted by swanbourne

It looks like a cross between golf and baseball, where you lift the ball into the air before you whack it.
It looks like John Belushi and Earl play it.
Phillies vs Yanks tonight in game one - should be fun :)
Go Phillies.... (Red Sox fan :D )
When i used tolive in Toronto, i had Blue jays season tickets, and absolutly loved the game,
I have noidea why as im not a fan of cricket or any other sport other than rugby league but i used to get to as many home games as possible, (which is about 80!)
I think its more of an experience with all the breaksand the more sedate pace of the game allows a lot more interaction between people.

Four of us who I assume are big fans of Cliff Lee at the mo. Haha Cliff the Yankee killer. :D
Cliff Lee was dominant. Pedro pitching tonight should be interesting as well.

Don't forget Howard, Victorino, Ibanez, and Utley whose form in the last few months has been excellent.
Hardly possible that the Phillies won the world series, Games 3 through 7 haven't been played yet, and it is a best-of-seven series. The Philadelphia Phillies have just won the World Series
It is the World Series because, at the time it was introduced, in 1884 as the World's Championship Series, it was the championship series between the only two major baseball leagues in the world, the American Association of Baseball (which died out, the Western League, later the American League, would eventually grow to be the "other" league to play in the series) and the National Baseball League.
We can't help it if other countries decided to take up the game.

You definitely have a point :) Frankly, I have to admit I fully expect them to pull it off...which means I have to enjoy the moment :)Originally Posted by Nalu

1-1 now. I've a feeling its going to go right down to the last game of the series. Its too close to call it.
I suppose I should congratulate the Yankees for beating my team - scraping home with some very dubious umpiring decisions and a drug fuelled line up - well done chaps :)
A very accurate summary and congratulations nonetheless. From mid-season the Yanks were the best team in baseball.Originally Posted by Rinaldo1711

I like to watch a bit of baseball when it is on tv..though it seems a bit slow and too much in favour of the pitching side - why do they allow the fielders to wear those big gloves that make catching the ball a lot easier ?
never heard of Nipsy before - you learn something new on here every day :)
