Unexpected, seem to have requested a DateJust

I’ve been on an expression of interest for a GMT Master for 3 years, and went into the AD to see if supply was any nearer. They still can’t say when, but I did have a very nice, best part of 2 hrs, coffee, watches and getting to know you session.

I did try both BLRO and BLNR for the first time, as there were no exhibition pieces when I first went on the list. In the flesh they are nice, but large, blingy, and the red and blue ceramics are really bright, a bit intrusive for a relatively subtle guy like me.

I was asked if I had thought about a Datejust? Maybe a bit middle aged for me, but I’ve never tried one, and I had time, so some versions came out. 41mm was too big, and the Roman numerals and fluted dial wasn’t my thing. She did bring out a mint dial 36mm with smooth bezel on Jubliee that was very impressive in the flesh. Cue the online configurator and I seem to have requested a blue dial, Jubilee bracelet and fluted bezel. The AD is optimistic that it might be within 3 months, and she’s still got me down for both GMTs.

My longstanding interest in Professional models seems to have ignored a slightly conservative watch that might suit me best of all. A blue dial and Jubilee would certainly diversify the collection.

    This is the one

That’s a great configuration. If I ever decide to get a date just that would be my exact pick. For me a date just with a fluted bezel looks best on a jubilee.

Have you seen the new motif blue dial? Also a good looking piece. Nonetheless I’m sure you’ll enjoy this immensely when the time comes.

    That’s a good sales person!
You went in for one watch but ordered another that they will actually be able to sell you!

    Only Joking!

It’s nice to have something to look forward to! Sometimes the least obvious watch becomes a favourite and it’s good to try something different every now and again.

That blue dial is lovely! I really wish I'd bought the blue rather than the rhodium as I'm really struggling to read it due to the poor contrast with the white gold hands.

Lovely jubbly. They saw you coming

I believe another TZer has recently reached a similar conclusion:

I've never had a DateJust but am also down for a blue dial now. I've asked for the 41 with domed bezel on Oyster. Always overlooked them but tried one on and really loved it.

I thought it was pretty disorienting in gold on the 41mm, and it made the Rolex, Oyster Perpetual Datejust hard to read. It’s probably better in blue, although I think a sunburst effect will suit me better.

The mint green was lovely in the flesh, although blue is more me, and matches what my wife describes as “uniform”. I’ve shown the boss, with a very favourable “that’s lovely, I like that”.

Maybe you shouldn’t meet your heros, I’m not sure the GMT is me at all, and after a 3 year wait !

That is a great configuration. I opted for the blue Motif dial though. Still waiting too!

I’ve had most of the modern Rolex sports models over the past few years and was also enticed by the salesman to try one of these on during a recent visit. At first I declined but eventually tried it on after some gentle persuasion. I now have to say that I’m a convert (once my preconception on size subsided) and if one were to come my way I’m pretty confident I’d be adding it to my collection.

I bought a blue dial 36mm with a smooth bezel and jubilee for my 40th earlier this year and it's a real cracker of a watch. It feels much more special than the other more expensive watches in my collection. It's also really versatile, can be dressed up or down and 36mm case on a jubilee is the most comfortable watch I've owned. A true classic.

I've had mine in identical configuration for about 18 months. My favourite watch by a distance, incredibly comfortable, classic design, can't go wrong. A great choice.

I’ve seen the green and blue both side by side and the blue appealed to me more as well. Can’t wait for the incoming pics!

Nice choice, the 36mm wears much better I think.

Managed to pick up this 36mm DJ earlier in the year. It gets lots of wrist time.

I think if I remember it was Skyman who posted about the blue datejust on jubilee and fluted bezel when first released and thought it looked great.
    Disagree about the Pepsi.
Bought one off here last week and found it much less blingy than I thought I would and in fact wore it all weekend and it went completely unnoticed. This was on the oyster.

Maybe blingy wasn’t quite the right word, but the ceramic colours were certainly brighter than I expected. I’m still on that list though!

I think in AD lighting the larger sports models, especially those with coloured bezels can come across maybe as a little blingy. Once out and about it don’t think this is so at all.

I’ve had my DJ (same configuration you’re looking at) for coming up to 2 years now and previously stool religiously to sports models. The DJ is just so comfy and versatile

The jubilee bracelet is one of the most comfortable and is less likely to show hairline scratches and swirls and on another positive note you will be more likely to receive your gmt.

I thought the Jubilee was lovely, and a nice change from an Oyster. I can’t be doing with PCLs anyway.

I agree that the GMT will be more likely to appear at some point. It’s increasingly clear that certain watches require a relationship, and relationship building purchases. Not to apply a judgement, it just is.

I must have had 2h of the Rolex Specialists time, and a good chunk of that was work, family, life stuff. It was a nice experience.

Latest version of the 36mm Datejust is excellent, the slimmed down lugs are a whole lot better than the previous offering. However, I think the lug tops would look better with a grained finish like the old 5 digit models and the current OPs, just works better in my view especially on the bimetal versions where the polished lug tops clashes with the polished gold.

The blue dial is my favourite, my Rolex days are over but I have a soft spot for steel models with a blue dial.

I don`t see the appeal of the sports/professional models especially at the inflated prices they command, much prefer a nice Datejust or OP36.

Beautiful, hope it comes soon for you.
I love the floor bezel and dial options but can't get my head around the cyclops.

Congratulations on a super looking watch (assuming you decide to take it).
I don't think it's "a bit middle aged"; my son (around 30 years old) has one and I think it is probably the most refined and sophisticated of his collection.

Love the DJ36s.blue baton is one of the best dials available, especially when paired with a fluted bezel.

Less dressy on the Oyster - and dial is going all Grand Seiko. Lovely.

I've also just done the exact same thing, albeit for a DJ41. Had never seriously considered one before, but on a whim & in the context of a similarly long chat with the AD, I tried one on & really liked it. Blue dial, fluted bezel & jubilee. None of which I liked before going to Goldsmiths that day, and now it's all I can think about. I never dress up, so I'm planning on making a virtue out of being a scruffy oik with an overly shiny bastard of a watch.
