    Addicts Assistance

This is the “save me from myself” corner.

Post the watch that has got your sap rising. Request others console you with why you don’t need it. That you have too many watches. That you'll inevitably become tired of it. That actually you had one and it was terrible.

Today's exhibit. I have become smitten by this:

Which is curious, as I never used to like it, preferring the Mark 12 or 15 hands and none of that weird second time zone nonsense. But now it is calling to me and I am feeling weak.

On no account should anyone post that it’s a marvel, that IWC don’t make them like this any more, that the late nineties to early noughties was the high-water mark of modern watchmaking. Simple quality for the discerning few, before the Instabrag generation ruined everything.

Reminder, this is the flagellation thread. A place to save a fellow watch idiot from yet another tick in the endless tock of life's unbalanced wheel of misfortune.

I await your chastising and ridicule.

    Nice watch.

Come on… this is a watch forum - what’s not to like about that IWC! I think self flagellation should be reserved for a different part of the forum

    Well this is going swimmingly.

Is there no sympathetic soul who will gleefully tell me that servicing will be ruinous and performed by ham-fisted clowns, that the dealers are pirates and rogues, that only a spiv or a bounder would sport such a hopelessly unremarkable trinket and that should I proceed regardless then I might as well purchase a giant loofah at the same time to go with the enormous bath I'll be taking come the inevitable resale.

Use your imagination, I am in deep peril here.

This is not a IWC from the golden age (when the dial said International Watch Company) and the GMT window is so wide it looks like it’s leaving you the choice of hour out of 3.

This version took one of the best looking, easiest to read watch designs and combined it with the aesthetics of an old style parking meter.

And who wants a limited edition watch that was made for TZ-Cameroun anyway?
    In the Sotadic Zone, apparently.

And it has that big yellow/brown duck staring at you!

    Quality contributions flooding in now.

Barely needs saying but feel free to play the man not the ball. TT, you've been posting nonsense on this site for 15 years and have displayed the kind of long term thinking and earnest commitment familiar mainly to Love Island contestants… etc etc

    Had one …

… flipped it. Now want another.

    You’ll do the same.

You are right. Might have looked good once, but an ageing bantam visage is not the ideal thing to see staring back at you, unless you are a fox.

A recognisable hazard, and one I must avoid. Must avoid.

    No ageing bantam.
    No Cameroon time zone.
    No modern IWC logo.

    And absolutely…

    No parking meter

That one really got to me. I feel the fever may be stabilising.

Absolutely not my cup of tea at all but some of my 'guilty pleasure' watches (PM me for details) would be very much Marmite for the great and good of this forum.

To give yourself time for reflection before the inevitable purchase, you should perform an unpleasant household chore. Such as pairing all your socks or aerating the lawn. With a toothpick.

If it's the Parking Meter vibe that the OP truly yearns for then surely this is where he should place his hard earned coin.

If there is only room to display every other hour numerically on a second time zone display then FFS choose the odd ones. They could have had a bunch of lovely prime numbers migrating across that oversized arch to brighten up a dull day, but instead make things exponentially more tedious.

I have a similar irrational urge for one of these

It’s not particularly expensive, the specs are pretty unremarkable (550m water resistance for something so large and thick) the movement is pretty basic and I know I would never wear it, but I think it’s a bit of fun and quite like the look.
Please talk me out of it.

I was thinking the same, it has a definite Jetsons or Blakes 7 air to it. Imagine how many times a day you would wallop that against a door jam.

The IWC: Overrated and overpriced brand, ugly, boring, by-the-numbers design, silly UTC window, no.

The Spinnaker: I too like it, but even I have managed not to buy one - it is pointless and unwearable, no.

My turn: talk me out of this (Dievas Maya mk 3 ~£900) -

Dial ruined by the black date wheel peeking through that tiny aperture, which also appears to be not central between the 4 and 5 indices.

High St brand’s model designed by the finance team not watch enthusiasts. Guaranteed to have WIS ask you…. why?

Now go and sit in the corner.

I’ve liked these KS reissues ever since they came out. Persuade me I don’t need one and if I did have one, it would become dull and bore me almost immediately and then be desperate to flip it.

    26 Jewels. Not 26, 26!

    They must be some jewels.

Apart from that, it's dull and will bore you almost immediately.

You will buy that and immediately know the Orient Bambino does the exact same thing but for a third of the price.

The date window is way too far inboard suggesting a movement too small for the case. And it shouldn't have a date anyway. And it's far too expensive. The original is much nicer and much, much cheaper
