    Another rolex question sorry

I was wondering if I could get some collective wisdom regarding a (shhh) rolex.
Short story, I’ve been promising myself a sub or a sea dweller for as long as I can remember and promised myself one at 50. Well that came and went last year and with my mum passing away I had other things going on.
To get things up to date, there’s a nice (I think) 168000 head only due a service in the next 12 months. What sort of price should I be looking at. It’s also a private sale.
It’s going to be a semi daily wearer.

Thanks in advance for any advice

Sorry to hear about your Mum, but glad you can think of happier things now.

168000 will be a great daily wearer. What dial does it have? You could restore it to whatever extent you want, at a price. Glass, bezel insert and bracelet could make most look very fresh…..or just wear it on a decent strap, as you fancy. Any pics?

Happy to check it over for you if you’re in my part of the world (North West), although a small drop in the forum charity page would always be groovy.

Thanks Haywood, I really appreciate that. I am from Liverpool. I’m not sure how to put photos on here or even if I’ve got the bandwidth. I’m currently working offshore in Nigeria. I’ll try and get a pic up

well that does not sound dodgy at all, is it really worth getting a Rolex if you have to look at ones like that.

The pictures are not the best but I would try to use a reputable dealer. Not saying this is dodgy but at least you get some peace of mind when using a dealer.
Are you happy head only? Not sure I would be.

Hard to tell from those pics. Fakes can be very convincing, it's a bit of a minefield out there.

Haywood is about the best expert in Rolex in the country, I reckon. I bought my 16610 from his place in Liverpool- can totally recommend it. Extreme piece of mind!

That's a very kind comment, above, albeit no doubt inaccurate. There are many dealers and collectors with their own specialised areas of knowledge, many of whom just don't share anything.

In about 20 seconds of searching one can find the original advert for this watch, with a number of additional photos. Here is a translation of the accompanying text :

"Watch was purchased in 2015 from Element in Time NYC. Since then it has hardly been worn, so it is still in good condition. This watch does not have a steel strap, but a leather strap"

Any value it had as a transitional model (no great premium at best) is largely lost because of the later service dial.

So, a 168000 head only with key service parts and no Rolex paperwork to support it. I also wonder what is going on with the top right lug when viewed from the case-back side (in the original listing). Is there wear or damage on the inner edge of that lug / case knurling adjacent?

It having no bracelet and little of vintage interest, I would equate it to a later 16610 of which you will find endless examples, complete and in better condition for not too much more. Go for one of those.
