    Puzzled...

Why are watches with extra dials called 'chronoGRAPHs'?

I have always been taught that a measuring device that provides the result numerically is a ***scope, and one that prints the result is a ***graph, scope if viewed, graph if written.

How did multi dial timepieces come to be given the nomenclature of something that produces a written result? It's all Greek to me.

I must have missed the lesson on chrono scopes versus graphs, that sounds like a fun class. I suspect that chronograph watches simply retained the name from the original chronographs which recorded a result (via a pen on moving paper, seismograph style…) for elapsed time.

From ancient Greek, Grapho, to record, write or compose

Do an internet search. The very first instruments did actually write on the dial. Over time designs change but names often stay the same. Like a mobile phone, it won't be too long before no one will be using them to make phone calls.
