I’m going to be the best explosive K9 ever

Urho just had his six months birthday. A big boy already. Still prone to losing his ears completely when around other dogs or eating feces. Two of his favourite things. Never did know puppies can be this lively.

It seems that I can forget my hopes of training him to be an explosive dog. I don’t have the skills to do it on my own and I haven’t found a pro willing to train themselves competition.

That's a good idea. It gives me another '+' to consider adapting our outside tap to a hot water (luke warm) water tap! We'll be having work done on the heating system this summer and the people who'll work on that are also the guys who've installed my hot/cold water system.

Great dog! Is it a Riesenschnauzer?

We expressed our interrest in a Middenslagschnauzer last week. We hope we can have one with the next dog nest in spring 2024.

A lovely rascal for sure! Full of piss and vinegar. He was by far the most lively pup at his puppy course. As smart as anything and very quick to learn things but it’s hard to channel all that energy. He’s not Riesen or Giant. He’s a standard schnauzer, so I’m guessing the same as your middenslag.

Spring 2024 will be quite the wait but I’m sure it’ll be very much worth it. What colour scheme are you going for?

    Edit. one more gratuitous pic

Schnauzer are so clever, regardless of size. Possu, let your dog be a teenager and train him after, he’ll be brilliant.

I can relate to that: now with my Rottweiler 2 yrs old, it's easier to learn him new things than when he was a pup. I think that the relationship between the dog and its owner ('human' if you like) makes a lot of difference. I know what triggers him in a positive way and that helps a lot.

Having written this: I do not suggest that puppy training is useless. Far from that. But there's a time-and-place for certain training.

Cheers guys, I’m not attempting anything special. Just trying to achieve basic manners and leash control. The breeder suggested that this is the way. She said the dog should be at least a year old before starting anything serious. I see no reason to go against her expertise.

I’m very happy with the way he’s turning out but he is a handful for sure.

    That's a handsome dog!

I sometimes try to convince my wife to get one of these terriers as well. But she thinks that one Rottweiler is enough... (She has two Maine Coons!)

Great fun, she’s got bags of personality and quite stubborn.

Oh waw, yours is massive dog than for the middle Schnauzer!

Yeah well, its for the best. We get our new home with garden this Christmas. Currently We live at a small Apparttement in the city.

My wife wants a dog for many years and I dinied it all that time. But since she convinced me to get a dog I can’t wait. Also, this breeder has a high reputation, so I’ll wait till their breeding dog is going to nest.

I think the ‘pepper and salt’ schnauzer looks nice. But in the end I don’t mind.

@ Time Cat: There was a family where I used to live who have a lab/schnauzer mix. Labrador body and a schnauzer head. Adorable dog and well-behaving as well. (I was not amazed about that, knowing the owners). Still they took a risk getting a dog from the 'ikzoekeenhond' website. (You're based in NED so you'll know that site, I'm sure).

I think the angles of the shots are misleading. He is not actually really big. Good sized for a still growing standard schnauzer, but by no means close to Riesen.

Sounds like your plans are all set and I hope everything works out well for you. If your breeder is a good one then all should be fine.

Last week was not a good week. I’ve posted about James, my senior rescue pharaoh, previously on this thread. Sadly he suffered the dog equivalent of a stroke and I had to take him on a one-way trip to the veterinary hospital. He had been with me for almost 3 1/2 years, having had a disrupted earlier life with several abortive rehomings.

I take some comfort from having given him a final home where he was very happy. I don’t think the loss of a dog, and I’ve had quite a few, has ever affected me so badly. The fact that his time with me was so short is no doubt a factor, but he was a dog of remarkable intelligence and sensitivity, and was my therapy hound in chief pretty much from the time he arrived. I’ll miss him more than I can say. I’m sure I will take on other senior rescues though in the future.

Man, I’m so sorry for your loss. Your picture is utterly heartbreaking but is also so life affirming too. In time, try to find the utterly wonderful times you enjoyed together and rejoice in that.

    Take care mate.

Best friends. In fact: she's afraid of the groomer. But we found out that it helps her when he's around as well. With him in sight, she's not afraid anymore.

His Labrador-like character makes him easy to handle. Until he met - in the Vet's waiting room- a Rottweiler male that was high in its energy or perhaps that dog was nervous. That Rottweiler lunged for me (on a leash, so nothing happened) But my dog 'was not amused'. The Labrador character disappeared and the protective Rottweiler modus was ready for action. I decided to go outside and we waited on a bench, in front of the vet's office.
