Maybe something from Sinn? Might be a bit big, but the 903 has a display back for example, and the Navitimer'esque vibe might appeal to a young chap.

So my lad turns 21 and the next day my daughter turns 18 early next year, and in the same month is a big wedding anniversary.
My lad for his 16th had an Everest the only time he hasn't worn it since was when he's been in hospital.
Recently he has been chatting about wanting a new watch for his birthday, he wants one with a display back and something that will look good on a bracelet or leather, depending on the occasion.
He chose the Everest after looking over my shoulder when I was looking for myself, and doesn't care about the latest 'in' brands, if he likes it he likes it, and the name is irrelevant.
He's not got the biggest wrists and so something 36-40mm would be ideal.
With a top end budget of £2500 but preferably lower, an interesting display back, looks good on bracelet or leather and 36-40mm, let's have some suggestions to put to him.
New or used not really an issue his Everest was from a WTB on here.

Both Christopher ward and Farer do some nice thing's with display backs, maybe even Steinhart.
Sent from a technical device.
Very difficult, given the breadth of the brief (36-40mm, <2500, displayback) As well as the usual let him choose advice, I would show him a few Nomos.
Maen skymaster?
Top grade eta display back and the carrera inspired case looks good on the bracelet and leather. 38mm as well.

Nomos was the brand that I initially thought off but didn’t post as they tend not to be on bracelets but rather on straps. That said, I believe they do now offer a few models on metal brackets and sell them separately too.
I love my Nomos and have n the pre-owned market they’re awesome value.

I'd agree with Farer, good for a younger lad as they have a bit of colour pop. Well within budget, timeless and (usually?) open display backs.
Lander IV comes to mind, or the Resolute (the lume is delightful)
Nomos is a great shout. Possibly a used GS too, can’t go wrong with a Tokyo stripe.
How about a Club Sport Neomatik?

Only concern with NOMOS is that the only watches you can get on a bracelet are the 42mm models and they wear big, so if he has small wrists they might not work. I certainly wouldn't buy one without him trying it on first.
A used Grand Seiko is probably the right answer, but I don't think you'll get in under £2500.
Mayber something like this from Oris:
It's 40mm, comes in a variety of colours and strap options, and has a display caseback. £1800 RRP.
The Nomos I've linked to in my previous post are 37mm.

Thanks for the suggestions so far a used GS or Maen are top of my list so far but will have a chat with him when he's home in a few weeks.

Have you thought about Longines?
Their Master looks pretty good and has a display back.
