Looking for some meal suggestions in London for a large group

    Hi folks

I've been given the unenviable task as the only UK based person to arrange the meals for an offsite next month. On 2 of the days we only have 8 people so I have booked Hawksmoor and Dishoom (as there are a couple of folks that don't like family style eating and would prefer to order direct from a menu). However, on one of the days we will have 18 people and I've seen some places offering family style (Or "feast" as Dishoom calls it) so I'd like to avoid that and either have a set menu or just normal a 'la carte.....

Any ideas for some places to eat that.....

    a) Can host 18 people
    b) Cost similar to Hawksmore/Dishoom (around £50-£60 per head)
    c) In a nice area (most are in UK/London for the first time so would like to show them around after)
    d) Ideally not a steak/indian place as already have that booked.
    e) Casual is preferred.

Any pointers would be great! (and happy to change Dishoom/Hawksmoor if the real life reviews from you folks say they aren't as good as they used to be)......
    Thanks
    Neil

A pretty safe option in terms of large-enough restaurants and cuisine would be Chinese I reckon. Gold Mine (Bayswater), Food House and Wan Chai Corner (both Soho) are worth a phone call. Barshu also, but a bit more specialised (Szechuan) and I can't remember if they have the space offhand.

Gastropub function room? Might expand the choices over a restaurant given the group size.

Groups of this size can also require pre-ordering the food from a pre-agreed abridged menu, so depending on your arrangements it might be worth bearing that in mind when discussing with the venue. Adds a whole load of faff to you as the organiser! People fail to preorder, forget what they ordered, change their mind etc.

    Red face

One of ‘The Ivy’ restaurants in London would suit. Nice atmosphere and the food is fine.

The Ivy Asia is fabulous and could work for you. They have a stunning private room for groups.
So clever my foot fell off.

Today and tomorrow on a sailing boat; 2 days as instructor at a sailing school.

Today was the worst day I ever had on July 31th. A bizarre amount of rain and wind. Waves were pretty high for a lake…

Forecast tomorrow: more wind, more rain, thunderstorm and perhaps hailstorms…

Wrong thread my friend, unless they are weather themed restaurants!

Some work colleagues organised an event on a restaurant canal on Regent’s Canal, which starts from Paddington. They should seat 18, are pretty casual and I imagine prices would be in your range. Pluses: good food, nice surrounding on a barge - minuses: you are stuck!

Primrose Hill. There are plenty of good pubs and restaurants in Primrose Hill, lovely area and if you walk to the top of Primrose Hill in the park then you can see a lot of London landmarks.

Good call - I had a business lunch in the private room recently and it was very nice.

I was at one of the restaurants up the Shard last Summer , food wise is wasn’t amazing but the view makes it a good ,venue for visitors from outside London .

I would recommend Bibendum but not sure about seating 18. Won’t hurt to ask .

Ivy I think is over rated .

Yauatcha and Hakassan are enjoyable , the Mumbai Yauatcha is the best but the London one is good if not as impressive a space.

Bob Bob Ricard . Pretend you are Russian mafia .

Brasserie Zedel massive impressive art deco space , live music , cabaret , friendly staff , food is nothing special but stick to the French standards and its good enough . Its a fun venue .

Cahoots is quirky fun but the food is second to the drinking and live music and the novelty of being in a 1940s tube station setting.

If I coukd go to any restaurant in London right now it would be Shack Fuyu , I suspect they can seat 18. Its casual and usually loud . The wings are amazing and I don’t normally like wings but the french toast with matcha ice cream is other worldly . Also in the heart of Soho so you have lots of options after .

    .
I've had a lot of fun lunches and dinners in Zedel (and in its previous incarnation as The Atlantic). As you said stick to the basics.

£50-£60 per head didn't go very far last time I went to Hawksmoor...

Indeed, unless it's the set lunch menu.

I found Hawksmoor in Piccadilly really very underwhelming for the price. Disappointing t-bone (£70) that was disgustingly oily, overcooked monkfish, and sides that were really greasy. The restaurant itself felt really tired too.

They had a very impressive and reasonably priced whisky selection though.

Owners changed last year, it's gone downhill. A real shame, the previous managers are the hospitality kings of London.
