went here many times when younger as its close by - nothing dodgy at all about it :) - (sold into private hands a few weeks ago then mysteriously burn out )
We do not live far and have been a few times, locals are up in arms, police opening an investigation.
Folk don't go to the pub as much these days, happening for years all across the country.
Still no need to burn it down!

In my younger days we went there most weekends not so much in later years it was a very different smaller place in those days though.
It’s very sad I doubt it will return the cynic in me says insurance being it’s recently been sold, if any one has thoughts of residential dwellings on the site good luck with that.
Just saw that on the news and immediately thought ‘insurance job or something just so they can knock it down’.
If there is any crime here then hopefully whoever stands to gain gets their knuckles rapped extremely hard.

Like others here, we used to occasionally drive over there in times past. It was a great place to take visiting friends and relatives, and regardless of the circumstance of its demise I can pretty well guarantee it will be literally irreplaceable.
I went there in the late 80s while I was briefly working in the area. It was bizarre watching a ball roll 'up' the bar. It was a decent pub and obviously a prominent local landmark, which is why we went.
Deffo suspicious that it burns down just as it gets sold, after a campaign to keep it as a local pub.
Sad if it was just some speculator wanting rid of the building, but not sure what the land is worth without the main interest?

Been in there some years ago and it was a tad disorientating but I remember the beer was good! As for the ‘post-sale’ fire, well I am sure the police will have a similar view to mine!
What are the odds that the same people were behind the vandalism that left it not viable as a business in July and the fire that leaves it not viable as a building? It stinks, but I’m sure it’s nothing a few brown envelopes can’t resolve.
Would be a shame if future development on the site was refused due to the subsidence risks.

The other thing BBC News are doing at the minute which is incredibly annoying is presenting news stories on social media from an interns bedroom as if they’re on TikTok.
Most times the phone is held freehand and shakes about over the screen.

I've just read that. Along with reports from both the police and fire service that the access road had been blocked. The plot thickens .. hopefully this story has too much traction now to just be buried.

2 historic pubs round my way suffered the same fate. Amazing how flammable they become once a property company buys them. One has to be rebuilt so they've done nothing to it at all. The other somehow now has houses where it once stood.
Amazing this has become a national story.

Andy Street the West Midlands Mayor said he wants to see it rebuilt brick by brick.
If it wasn’t listed then I don’t see they needed permission to demolish.

They interviewed the last landlord who said he was told it was a listed building,plus the council said permission was needed before demolition.
Best that I can find...Britain’s wonkiest pub in bid for protected status.
there probably needs to be some serious scientific research done as to why this and other old buildings seem to spontaneously combust not long after they are purchased by developers..... :)

Old pub on scenic land purchased for "mixed use"
Suddenly sets on fire.
Transpires that access roads for fire brigade had been blocked and hampered.
Building demolished within 48 hours without permission.
Usually this would be a 3" filler on page 6 of the newspaper but I'm very pleased to see it get national headlines and spark outrage.
EDIT. Ah, the papers have named the buyers anyway. A young couple with form... recently bought a pub 5 miles away, closed and gutted it, applied for planning permission for houses which was knocked back.
Not hard joining the dots at this point.

I read that the pub was bought by the ower of the adjoining quarry / landfill site. If that's true, he would already have had diggers.
This is what happens when you replace journalists with sixth-formers on work experience.
