    More bike related stuff

Just back from a few days visiting Ypres, the Ardennes, and the Eifel mountains. Brilliant roads and we had a grand time. The Nurburgring was chaos, and every time we ventured they closed it to motorbikes… but we weren’t fussed and enjoyed some of the brilliant roads in the Eifel. Heaven.

    RD500 used as intended.
Stopped by to have a good matter with Dale [Lomas] of ex-PB/MCN/Fastbikes fame.
    My mate’s MultiV4S a good bike…
    But R1250GS still king.

    Zero Motorcycles

No not less , the electric versions. I attended a bike night this evening where Zero motorcycles were doing demo ride outs. I tried the Zero SRF apparently the full fat version eg biggest battery and most power.

Firstly the biggest stumbling block for me is the price £18K with the £3k govt subsidy included. Power wise its torque 190 Nm is nearly three times my 800cc Bee Em. Half of the route was in Eco which is capped at 73 mph and has a lot of regen braking. The balance of the route was in sport which does nothing to the chassis or suspension but releases full power.

The bike weighs appx 230 kgs so is no lightweight, but in sport it sets off like a scalded cat. Of course no gearshift so seamless power. The test route was mainly 50mph with one section of nat speed limit. The bike certainly makes progress quickly.

If you haven’t tried one I would encourage you to do so, ideally on a dry day as that rear tyre could certainly light up under wet conditions.

I feel once the price reduces to closer to £12k it will be a great alternative to a sportsbike for an afternoons hooning. Its not currently ready to challenge a 1250’s continent shrinking ability, but range will improve

The problem is finding a charger available, the app working, the charger working, hanging around in the cold for an hour while it charges.
The accommodation you go to stay no to charging etc.etc.

Car parks are going to have to have charging in just about every bay for this to be viable.

Whilst I’ve not yet ridden a Zero, I took a Harley Davidson Livewire out for a couple of hours a couple of years back and was very impressed with the performance (but not the price of nearly £30k at the time).
I agree that they’re only really suitable for a Sunday blast and not really ideal for long distance or touring, but within the range limitations, they are great bike.

When out for a Sunday blast with my brother in law, we usually stop for a brew and bacon sandwich at the 1066 cafe, who have recently had a rapid charger installed in the car park so, if I had one, I could easily put another seventy or so miles in the tank whilst having my breakfast!

My only concern (apart from the price) with an electric bike, is how well the battery would stand up to sitting in the garage over winter. Not an issue for some but many of us are fair weather/summer bikers these days.

I suppose this is bike related… I was at a cafe yesterday with the mum of a BSB rider. She told me that Paul Bird was in hospital and very very poorly.

He passed away today. 56 years old.

I know he's not been in the best of health over the past few years.
Bit of a marmite man, but I loved his no nonsense competitive attitude.

    Unhappy In the wars again

Taking a slow left hand curve 50 yards from my destination. Foot slipped off foot peg and bent back way further than my natural movement would allow. Broken tib and fib right on my knee replacement. Waiting to be transferred to specialist team in Liverpool.

Oh shit, that looks nasty Enoch. Wishing you a speedy recovery.
If I may attempt to provide some solace, I had a very similar injury skiing last year, and the recovery was remarkably quick.

Got the bike booked in with Freddy Trott tomorrow, for the full monty pre-winter prep, including:

    ✅citrus pre-wash
✅Snowfoam safe wash (remove any contaminates)
    ✅fully blow dried
✅XCP or ACF50 misted over engine, suspension etc
✅extra XCP applied to banjo bolts and any other I know needs extra
✅2 stage machine polish to remove any imperfections (yes new bikes have many)
    ✅prep all bodywork
✅apply either Ultimaxx Signature pro the Signature Quartz ceramic (5 year) ceramic
✅optional air brush application of ceramic making sure to get full coverage
    ✅apply titanium gel chain lube
    ✅before/after video supplied

Aside from the fact that Freddy has to be one of the best bike detailers in the business, I've always liked the way the chain is treated (it comes back with a kind of white wax on it, which lasts for ages without picking up a load of road detritus). I may hunt it down and give it a go myself, although I have a fair bit of Maxima Chain Wax to get through yet, and it's one of the most highly rated lubes/waxes out there.

I've added a website link to my post. The coverage map doesn't seem to be working, but this is copied from the site:

This map shows the areas that we serve, we are based in the Hertfordshire, London borders. Please note that you may be subject to an added fee if you live in the Congestion Charge Zone. We will cover all of London and the surrounding areas so if you do not appear on this map do not hesitate to enquire.

Thanks. Have you used them before ?

The company I used to use took my bike away to do the job and it fell off the trailer so I need a new recommended pro.

I've used Freddy for every bike I've owned, generally once a year (pre-winter). Every time the service and outcome has been superb.

FWIW, I took this shot of my (former) Tiger as soon as I arrived home post-treatment (and just before setting off for a long weekend in Kent).

Yes, I had it for about a year. It was all the bike I needed, but I never once looked at it and thought "I love that bike".

(That said, if I had a means of storing more than a single bike, I'd probably still have it as a kind of utilitarian all-rounder, as it was a brilliant ride.)

apart from machine polish (my bike is mat) i do all that myself every time i clean the bike , tbh i consider general bike maintenance and being able to do at least simple stuff (general service) a part of owning a bike.

    * as a matter of interest what is the charge for doing that clean ?

There's far more in the spec than a routine clean, and I doubt many people would take that on regularly (it's about a four hour job done to the standard I'm talking about, and that's by a pro with the right equipment). There are certainly items in there that you wouldn't want to repeat with each clean (e.g. ceramic coating), anyway.

usually takes me a couple of hrs , yeah i missed the ceramic i dont do that, i do everything else though inc the downpipes /chain , i have foam canon and dryer as well as a compressor for acf 50 / citrus degreaser for chain etc - i usually do about once a month (the acf 50 takes about 10 mins max to do with a small compressor and airgun ) .

    * i understand some people cant or dont want to do it themselves, as i said i concider it part and parcel of owning a bike , theres nothing difficult about it and you dont need to be a 'professional' to do it :)

Do you recall if they need a water and power supply or if they’re self-contained?

I have a few of my bikes that need a decent clean and I don’t have water supply for them.

Same problem for me. I only have street parking with no water or a lockup garage down the road (where the bikes live) with no power or water. There is a really good bike cleaner/detailer round here (actually lives less than half a mile from me as the crow flies) but he needs power and water. He won't either take my bikes away or let me drop them at his place. I get that it doesn't fit his way of working (and insurance) but it's a pain for me.

I’ve been quoted £275-300. However, £100 of that is the ceramic treatment.

Well here's the video as promised. Ignore Freddy's reference to "new client" - he knew I wasn't so I suspect it was just artistic licence!

£250 all in, including a VERY generous application of ceramic coating (5 year). Can't complain at that!

Tony that looks a very thorough job. I had a twitchy arse when he was airbrushing so close to the rear disk, but Im positive he knows what he is doing. Its so pleasing to see how a machine polish can take a OEM finish and take it to the next level of depth and shine. And as we all know we like shiny on here :)

I reckon it’s pretty good value actually, Steve. And you’re right about taking the OEM finish to another level - there’s no comparison really, which shows what a rubbish factory finish you get with these bikes.

Not just bikes T. My missus has had two new MX5’s. Out of the showroom both have swirlies and fine scratches:(

I’ve finally had a chance to enjoy the recent better weather. Today I finished tinkering, fitted new plugs, plug caps, points, plate and condensers.

What a beautiful bike that is, Greg. Hope to see it IRL one day.

    Without a doubt.

Thanks Tony, birth year bike and you know the saying, definitely looking better than me!

We are off to Norfolk tomorrow and I have been pleading my case for Kate to take the dogs in the car and I can make my own way on the Triumph.

Yep, you guessed it, we are all going in the car

Sorry boys and girls; as much as I love seeing all those gleaming street bikes you all spend hours cleaning and polishing, sometimes its nice to get dirty!
If anyone fancies coming out for a blast off road drop me a message. There are quite a few decent lanes near me.
