    Work backpack recommendations

My 15 year old Wenger backpack is coming to the end of its life and I'm exploring what to replace it with. I use this for overnight travel with work, carrying up to 2 laptops and accessories plus my Sony over the ear headphones, clothes (shorts and underwear) and toiletries for a couple of nights. It is a little bit of a squash and a squeeze in the Wenger - but it works. Ideally I'm looking for something that is high quality and designed with overnight travel in mind. Any recommendations?

Would a tactical backpack be an alternative?

How much you looking to spend?

When I travelled away lots, swore by Tumi to given me space & quality. Always wanted a RIMOWA though, which made the Tumi seem much better value for money.

When I stopped being away as often, gave it to my BIL who was starting to increase travel, it is still going strong after probably 15+ years of weekly use.

Another Tumi fan here - not cheap but great durability.

How many litres is the existing backpack?

What price are you looking at?

Thank you for the thoughts so far. Not sure on existing size but I would guess around 50 litres. Budget is TBD but probably neither super cheap given my requirements, or hugely expensive. Hopefully that is helpfully ambiguous - sorry!

50 litres is very large for a work backpack!

    Agreed, that is hillwalking-for-a-week sized

Briggs and Riley have done me well, as a Tumi alternative

50L will be too big for cabin luggage.

My work backpack is a Thule.
I don't use it as an overnight one but they make ones big enough for that.
Good value and well made IMO.

Having checked, the specification says 30L. The space in my current Wenger is almost enough. But it doesn't have specific facilities for clothes etc which means they often get crushed. It is this one:

Wenger Carbon Laptop Backpack, Fits up to 17″ Laptop, 30 l, Unisex, Ideal for Business Uni School Travel, Black https://amzn.eu/d/ijXcegb

Most 40L backpacks will be cabin approved.

I use this and it comes with a packing cube for the main middle section

I’ve done 2-3 day business trips a few times with just this while others are wheeling around suitcases

Because of its design it also doesn’t look out of place when I’m in the office with just a laptop, notebook and water bottle either

If you've had 15 years out of the current one I think that's a good reason to buy another.

I have been using a Wenger for overnights since 2018 and it's been great.

    Work backpack recommendations

I posted about a year ago for similar advice after my Tumi which had lasted 18 years. Ended up with Briggs and Riley. Excellent. Very pleased with it. You can see them on display at John Lewis.

Agreed - the limitation with Wenger is that none seem to have space for packing clothes that keeps them in good condition. However, buying separate clothes packing cubes/ inserts might be an answer here.

Have a look at these folks. Although advertised as gym bags I used ours for a recent holiday as the backpacks have loads of pockets, storage compartments to cover all day to day tasks and you have plenty to choose from.

I have one of these for the gym (I’m an CrossFit w*nker now and its part of the uniform ) and have also used it on holidays as carry on. Very useful with lots of storage. Not sure it’s a work backpack due to the patches I have on there but very good nonetheless.
