    USA Mobile Number

Off to America soon and looking to get a SIM card with an American number before I go. Anybody done this or know the easiest/best place to get one in the UK?

    Cheers, Toddy

We’ve just been and my wife bought an e-sim for the duration. Worked out about £40 for two weeks of unlimited data. It was with Hola fly and worked out cheaper than EE’s daily rate.

The only watch out was that I needed to hit spot to her to download and install it as it didn’t seem to want to play ball on the airport WiFi.

Thanks for that, I'll take a look.

Beware with a lot of these eSims that you don’t actually get a telephone number. - they’re just for data.
If that is okay, look at Airalo.

Thanks, didn't realise that. We actually need an American number for a few things so will have to double check.

We used these and had no problems at all for the 3 week duration. You get a US number unlike some or most eSims:

The hola fly e-sim does give you a local number, not needed in our case (data was the main need via WhatsApp etc) but it was there.

If you buy a 3 PAYG sim in the UK it roams comfortably full data in the US.

10gb a tenner for a month through to 50gb for £20 on UK Amazon

Ah I see. It’s the US number you need not just roaming data. In which case Lyca mobile are quite good here.

Thanks for all the replies. Think I'll go for the T-Mobile physical SIM instead of an eSIM.
    Thanks again, Toddy

Whenever I travel state side I just ask at reception for a local 'cell' store and go get a PAYG sim. Swap the settings to make that the primary and enjoy the rest of my trip.

Just a quick update incase anybody is looking for similar. Bought a 21 day T Mobile unlimited data SIM from BigTravelStoreUK on Amazon for £34. Setup the day before we left for America with no issues. Was handy that it was a USA mobile number as we registered this with a few different apps that we used while over there. Excellent 4/5g connection which was great at some of the Disney parks as the WiFi was shocking.
    Would definitely recommend

Anyone done anything similar for south east Asia, specifically Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam? Doing a two week cycle tour and (much to OH's amusement/irritation) I want to be able to Strava the ride.
I only need data, though, not the calls/texts/mobile number

Could you not use your Wahoo / Garmin (if you have one of course) to record the rides and e.g. use hotel WiFi to upload them when you get a chance?

Take a look at Airalo, especially their Regional E-Sims:

    In the Sotadic Zone, apparently.

As a collector of mechanical watches, I have resisted going down the smart watch/cycling GPS gizmo rabbit hole. If my phone does it, fine, but otherwise I'm not a fan (yet - I have had to eat my words many times!)

E-sim's are definitely the way to go. You can purchase them beforehand and just activate when you need them, cheap and hassle free. I keep my main sim number active too so I can be reached by phone.
