Crappy wrist shot:
Seiko 3803-7010, from 1973.
I just got my Sumo back out of the box.
I had forgotten how nice it is.
Yeah, I have one somewhere but it was a pain to fit if I recall correctly.
SKX171 moded, the SKX continuation as it should have been... (sapphire crystal, coin edge bezel with ceramic insert)
This one…

After some considerable time looking for one, I finally found myself one of the 35th anniversary 1000m Tunas, a Japanese market SBBN051 (disclosure: I am a sucker for a Kanji day wheel). It’s a good stablemate for my SBBN025, the last “Marinemaster” dialled 1000m Tuna aka the “Darth Tuna”. Also a Japanese market watch, it’s a firm favourite in the collection and the SBBN051 is heading that way too.
It has all the usual Tuna features: a monocoque case in plain, silver coloured Titanium, ceramic shroud in a very dark grey (unlike Darth’s absolutely black), sturdy easy-grip bezel and a wonderfully deep-set dial with insane amounts of lume. It also wears well, the lugless case making it much more wearable than the colossal dimensions suggest.
The differences are in the details: gold-coloured shroud screws and strap hardware, a beautiful dial which fades from dark blue to black, applied markers and a couple of nice flashes of bright yellow (the seconds hand, engraved “Lock” text on the crown, and the crown tube itself, so you can see when it’s unscrewed.
My only quibble is the handset, which has syringe points (I like) but is black painted so these are very hard to see unless the light is right (I don’t like). Would’ve looked better in blasted steel or painted white, IMHO.
I experimented with toning down the gold bits (I’ve never really gone for gold), replacing the screws with steel ones and the strap hardware with Titanium. It didn’t look bad, but I think the more flamboyant look is better.
Anyway: a few photos (including the toned-down version). I’m delighted with it.
Fresh off the boat… new (to me) King Seiko 5621.
I love the way the Japanese rate something as ‘junk’. This has the original leather strap that is expectedly tired after 49 years but the watch is so nice otherwise.
Stole this for approx £120 delivered. Going straight into the permanent collection until I can replace it with a similar GS.
