The survivors suffered terribly with mental health and were likely to be called cowards back then for having problems, they were brave and good men so i remember them as much as any other man.
No photo or medals, as my dad still has them, but I'm remembering my grandfather today who fought in WW2. I have his service binoculars and I shudder to think what he saw through them, a constant reminder for me that days now are very much easier than in his day.
He went to war with a full head of hair and came back a couple of years later almost completely bald. I don't know what kind of shock does that to a man.

Thank you all for sharing your photos, its a good way to remember them.
I'm remembring my grandfather. He fought nearly five years in total in the WW2, defending Finland against the Soviet Union. He was an artillery lieutenant. Finland remained independent and I think Finns feel quite strongly about the current issues with Russia.
Remembering my English Grandpa who was in the RAF and my French Grandpa who was a French Army Officer, both in WW2.
Thank you both for your service and sacrifice gents.

Another amazing memory and reflection today.

The Parable of the Old Man and the Young
So Abram rose, and clave the wood, and went,
And took the fire with him, and a knife.
And as they sojourned both of them together,
Isaac the first-born spake and said, My Father,
Behold the preparations, fire and iron,
But where the lamb for this burnt-offering?
Then Abram bound the youth with belts and straps,
and builded parapets and trenches there,
And stretchèd forth the knife to slay his son.
When lo! an angel called him out of heaven,
Saying, Lay not thy hand upon the lad,
Neither do anything to him. Behold,
A ram, caught in a thicket by its horns;
Offer the Ram of Pride instead of him.
But the old man would not so, but slew his son,
And half the seed of Europe, one by one.

Klaas, a distant relative fell on May 10th 1940 defending the Afluitsdijk in the Netherlands.
His name is proudly listed at the museum memorial.
