    Pollock renamed Colin at Sainsburys

    Why?

I heard this on the Today programme driving to work this morning, apparently Sainburys customers are too embarrassed to ask for pollock so some marketing genius has decided to re-brand it colin is to be pronounced "colan", after the French term for cooked pollack presumably.

So what's wrong with asking for pollock, why would it possibly be of embarrassment? Sound a bit like bollock? Or maybe they have an aversion to abstract expressionist art. Please explain someone.

    Cheers,

    Gary

How the heck do they find these things out anyway? Do they approach a lurker at the fish counter and 'out' them for not asking - or do they watch and then pounce onto the poor sod who points and says "I'll have some of that fish, please"?

    Pillocks.

You mean abruti surely Ralphy

You do wonder how they research these things though. I like the idea of Sainsburys customers being outed as a pollock philistines though, imagine the shame .

Got the better of my potential embarrassment on Saturday at the Dorchester farmers market. The fish stall there was selling large p*llock fillets at 3 for £9.50 caught that morning. Weighed at home these came in at 2.75kg (£1.50 / lb  ).

    P*llock & chips last night - d*licious... :D

Had a mate called Colin once. Stupid, stupid Sainsburys. The pollock is a great fish. It won't taste half as good if it's called col'ah'n. People will ignore it because they don't know what it is. In fact, this new name is just a load of colin.

Maybe it's the largest thing Sainbury's have to worry about in the current climate.

Re: Pollock renamed Colin at Sainsburys

It's a marketing thing: if you have a load of pollock to sell, issue a stupid press release and get your advertising done for free by the national media who will talk about it ad nauseam until everyone knows that pollock is nice, tasty, affordable and can be bought at your local Sainsburys, where people will proudly ask for it by its real name rather than be shown up as pretentious pseudo-sophisticates.

Great marketing by Sainsburys, a little pathetic that the media at both ends of the market routinely trot out PR puff that is only intended as free advertising.

On the other hand it may cause people to refer to Sainbury's as a bunch of pathetic c**ts. :)

It might do, but we're talking about them, it's been in all the press I've read today, all over the net and on the radio - breakfast and drive time. Tens of thousands of pounds of free advertising, and all for the cost of an emailed press release. Job well done.

:D some at Sainsburys is an old Python fan I reckon....
gonna give Tesco & Morrisons something to think about, will they follow suit if it increases sales? will Sainsburys trademark "Colin" for wet fish? if so Tescos & Morrisons better move quick and register "Alan", "Sid", "Norman", "Brian" etc... or lose out.

It'll probobly be "Jurgen" or "Helmut" in Aldi & Lidl this time next week

If they wanted to give pollock a new image, they should have called it "Tarquin".
