How waterproof is an Omega Speedy.......?

I received my first(!) Speedy "sapphire sandwich" on leathe deployment.

Blowers said it was waterproof but didn't recommend more than the odd "accidental/forgot to take it off" pool visit.

The manual states it's "water resistant" to 50 metres...which to me is water proof.

O know it doesn't have a screw in crown but Omega obviously don't think it's an issue.

    Your thoughts....

To me 50m is water resistant and not water proof. Though there undoubtedly will be many who will say they have been swimming with it without problems, I would not take a speedy into a pool, lake, lagoon, river, stream, creek, puddle, sea, ocean or even bath tub.

Interestingly the sapphire-sandwich Pro - EDIT: sorry, the other sapphire-equipped Speedmasters I mean to say - is rated to 100m, as is the Reduced, and all the other Speedmaster derivatives with sapphire tops. But when the Reduced had an acrylic crystal, it was also rated to 50m, as the regular Pro is. So it looks like the crystal (or its mounting method) the deciding factor.

But if these watches are capable of withstanding the same kind of water ingress, why bother distinguishing between 50m and 100m at all? All it does is confuse people.

I have read previously that 50m is the distance you can run with it on in the rain before it is waterlogged :D

Don't take a Speedy into the sea, pool, bath or sauna! They are water-resistant like I am bullet-resistant!

There are loads of them had misting problems after a simple pool dip.

It is counter intuitive though, 50m sounds loads. I've got a 40m canon waterproof case for my ixus and 40m means 40m.
Sounds like a con, it shouldn't say 50m, it should say "Splash Proof".

    This caused a chuckle:

"We recommend you have the water resistance checked once a year by a service centre or agent, if possible before the bathing season"

I must be a modern man ,I have a bath once a week .........................................whether I need it or not

Do you regularly descend more than 175 feet into the depths?

(But a Speedmaster Pro is not waterproof - no water in space see? So no need! )
So clever my foot fell off.

Heh :) If only the Speedmaster was in your hactual fact designed for space, the rationale would fit perfectly...

O know it doesn't have a screw in crown but Omega obviously don't think it's an issue.

    Your thoughts....

Remember that the 50m quoted is only for pressure only and not actual depth in water. YOur average power shower at home will produce at least 80psi.

So keep it well away from water.

I would not go diving\ swimming with anything of value rated 100m or under.

80 bar? Even 8 bar would strip your skin off!

No no - just that a lot of folks are under the misapprehension that the Speedmaster was designed for space, as that's the only thing it's associated with. (Well, that and an episode of Spooks :)) The Speedmaster was introduced in '57, when not even the Russians were in space. I think it was a watch designed for motor-racing fans originally, although you'll be hard pressed to find anything written about the Space^H^H^H^H^HSpeedmaster that mentions anything but NASA.

Re: How waterproof is an Omega Speedy.......?

Do not take a 50m watch in the water - I'm sure some are ok - but I would not risk it - it's not what is was designed for - luckily my speedmaster is 100m so it's getting wet - if it goes wrong it's my own fault!
It's just a matter of time...

to a layman 50 m sounds like loads - of course common sense would say that if you spend big money on a watch you would read the instruction manual that came with it. wasn't there some move to change the way we do depth ratings on watches to avoid all these misconceptions ?
