Hi,
Nice collection, I like the JLC, never seen that before.
Cheers,
Daddel.
I have created an irrational lust for a 233 and I don't know what to do!!
Help!! :drunken:
I'm thinking of selling about 5 of my special watches which I love but don't wear that often so that I can buy a 233 off of SC for the £6-7k mark.
That would leave me with just a Sub Date, Black faced Daytona and the 233. (and I'm after a 1977 Seiko 6309-7040 for the "I may get mugged tonight" watch.
I would have to sell the following.....
1974 Herer Silverstone
1966 Wakmann (Gigandet/Breitling) Triple date chrono
1985 Breitling Navitimer Airborne
1970's JLC Memovox
1964 Re-edition Heuer Carrera Black face
They are all lovely watches that I have collected over the last few years.
Question
Is it better to have 3 or 4 grails or many more watches which you do and don't wear?
A few pics (1st two pinched off t'interweb)
Hi,

Got a new watch, divers watch it is, had to drown the bastard to get it!
6 mths ago...i would have said the more the better.....but these days, i just get annoyed that some stuff doesn't get worn...so i too, am erring towards...less is definately more.....
Don't know if i would use all the funds on one piece though....
I definately wouldn't dump the JLC though, unless it was to me of course.... :D, classic watch, given some great 70's styling...love it.......
It's a bugger watch collecting! we all seem to get in this situation. My opinion for what it's worth 3 grails.
In the three minutes since reading the OP, I've actually changed my mind three times as to what my advice would be.
So I should probably just sit on the fence for this one! :D
I love the Panerai 233 so I would opt for that,
I wouldent wear the vintage watches much except maybe for the JLC
So my vote is 3 grails.
Go for your grail(s) mate!
Alex
+1 buy the grail. You only need (or not really ) one watch.
Thats a difficult one! Some of these watches you have are quite rare & would be hard to replace i would imagine! So if you really like what youve got then you arent going to be happy either way!
What about flogging the daytona for the Pannerai (you can always get another daytona ;its not like they are rare :D )
This is easy for me, lose the navitimer, the Carrera re-edition and the walkman, as nice as the walkmann is they do come up now and again, the JLC is a little difficult, this model is quite rare and if yours is in super condition you will find this hard to replace but it is an aquired taste and if you don't wear it .....
The silverstone is a no brainer, keep it.
I reckon that the 4 above will get you c.5k or just under, save up the other 2k then get the Pam
But i would still wait a bit longer to save up and keep the JLC
For me less is more
Sell them - I'll have the Wakmann please. :D
definately sell them... I had the same choice I went from 6 to 3... I am trying to keep it to 3 but theres always another "grail"
ive lately come round to the opinion anything not getting wrist time should be moved on.
Very noice collection. If it were me I would sell
Respect the past, live the present, protect the future
If it were me and the pieces were just gathering dust sell them off and get what you'll actually wear. If you are interested in growing the collection...well, there's your answer. They're all wonderful watches btw, but you knew that already. :)
Unless there is sentimental value attached, if you don't wear them then get rid :D

I've had a couple of PM's about selling the whole collection as a job lot..
Should I do that or should I pop them all on SC separately? I guess it depends on how much I'm offered for the job lot.
Feel free to send me PM offers if you're interested in any of them.
Could always just be patient and keep them all.

I'd sell and take the grail 8)
3 grails :D
I love them all - what a lovely collection...
Sell and get your grails. The 233 is one of the nicest contemporary Panerais money can buy! If you need anyone to look after the collection while you decide, I am your man! :D
Good luck with the decision, I will be keeping an eye to the SC! :P

I am in the process of 'downsizing' so would say cut down on numbers -
But if you 'fought' to get certain pieces in your collection I'd suggest thinking carefully before selling. Having said that - maybe ask yourself why you collect watches? But I tend to have a rule - if I don't wear a watch I will sell it on to someone who will. I have had a look back and it's scary the number of watches that I've got through - and the financial hit - though with a bit of luck and buying second hand the hit can be lowered.
Good luck!
Ford... you're turning into a penguin. Stop it. HHGTTG

Good luck everybody. Have a good one.
Only 8 watches , call yourself a WIS, WUS would be more like it  .
Seriously though if the 233 is speaking to and your others don't get the wrist time they deserve, you go for it. Personally Panerais do nothing for me at all, so I would never entertain the thought but each to their own. The only thing I would say is think about the ease of replacing some of your current pieces. Money aside, anyone can buy a 233 pretty much any day of the week, the same cannot be said of your watches. Hell I'm confusing myself now  .
Cheers,
Gary
Its a difficult one, I think its best to keep your collection and save for your next "must have" watch. Because there will always be another one after this that you will have to have, even though you think you wont ( or is this just me? ).
However, if you don't have the funds and you simply must scratch the itch now, then sell up but be prepared for the dark, lonely nights of regret.

Its a tough one, but the grails are the grails...
i have done exactly the same lately and have sold 5-6 pieces off the last few months
to pay for 2-3 harder to get pieces i will use and enjoy more.
the others were bought a few yrs back and i wanted them back then but there was no
need to have so many similiar pieces so sold them when the opportunity arose (good ole jed calling and asking if i wanted this and this, i didnt hesitate ,as its now or never :D ) to add a few personal grails that i never thought id have the opportunity to own.
its entirely your call but , i know lots of guys who have box fulls of watches they look at
but dont actually wear , i was exactly the same had about 12+ or so at one point
but have realised id rather have 6-7 pieces i can actually use and enjoy more.
good luck with your decision :)
Sorry your'e only allowed one GRAIL watch, that's why it's called a grail watch :roll:Originally Posted by mr noble

Grails!
I've got too many watches at the moment and don't wear a lot of them - but seem to be far too attached to make the rational decisions of which ones to sell - I want to get down to 10 - as I have a nice 10 watch Rolex box and that should be enough IMO!
But if you can't replace soem of the piece and you woudl miss them - ten save up and get the grails later - don't sell anythign unless you reall y need the money - that is a good motto!
Good luck
It's just a matter of time...
I think it really depends on whether you really like those watches... if you do, then you should save up for your next grail rather than sell your hard to come by watch collection...
I have a hoarding mentality and will almost never sell my watches although I increasingly find myself never wearing some watches in my collection... I still take them out, wind them and watch them move or glow in the dark before putting them back into the drawer...
You buy the 233 and you'll have even more problems, i sold two rolexes to get the 233 and last week i went back into the AD to try on another Rolex and it felt very small and the dial looked cramped, i've had a fair few rolexes in my time and was wanting to get another one as i missed the sub, but after getting the 233 i would just struggle to wear a rolex again :(
Anyway, back to the question, it's really up to you, do you wear any of these watches, are the two you're keeping the main two you wear and the others just boxed watches, if so then it might be worth getting rid of them and buying something useful and wearable, you may also need further funds to buy the numerous straps that a panerai needs, i think i'm up to 9 straps now :D
IMO, old watches are like old cars: they should be moved!
i did the down size thing, sold a few to buy a nice more expensive watch that i longed after, now i have missed the ones i sold and spent more replacing them again!!! your call just have a good think,
Quality over quantity.. well that's what I'm saying at the moment, but will admit it's not easy sticking to that rule
Thanks for the song Ray. ;)
cant say it helped the decision, but it put a smile on my face
