    First world problem

So, which three watches do I take on holiday from this lot, to fulfil the following purposes:

    1) Beach
    2) Daytime
    3) Evenings

I'm thinking GW-5000, MM300 and Daytona. Can't make up my mind, though.

I can't help, but just think how good it would be if one watch covered all the bases.

I do like them, actually, and if I was taking just one then the PAM268 would do the same job.

Tough decision to make Tony, if you had hung on to the Great White you would only have to take one thereby not compromising the baggage allowance!!!

You clearly need an evening watch. So the Daytona or the Reverso will cover that. The MM300 will cover anything the GW5000 will, so no need to take that anywhere (ever)
The GO PC is a perfect daytime watch.

  8. #8
Depends where you are going on holiday, if it was my holiday the GW-5000 would do all roles it would be safer.

I usually take one nice watch (2254.50) and a survive everything and everywhere watch ( GXW-56 ), all bases covered.

    Have a nice holiday.

    :)

I don't want to travel with two high-value watches, Tim, so it's either the Daytona or the GO. I also like the idea of having a watch with me that can be chucked about and the GW-5000 fits that bill.

The husband of my mothers carer was attacked by two men one afternoon this summer upon leaving a supermarket whilst holidaying in Greece.
They were attempting to steal the Rolex he was wearing, but as a handy mechanic he managed to fight them off. The whole incident was witnessed by his wife who was waiting outside the supermarket and who was also wearing a Rolex, though thankfully hers was concealed by her sleeve.

I think the GO is more discreet than the Daytona.

    Tony.

Just had a look at your collection and I am thinking of a Panerai, I am leaning towards the 268 have you any more pictures particularly a wrist shots.

I have a 7.5" wrist and wondered if the external strap system it uses would hang over ?, I am leaning towards the 268 because it uses the same hand wound inhouse movement as the 233 but don't need the GMT, I have a Pam 24 Luminor so that covers the classic case, but I also like the look of a sandwich dial, this looks like it covers all my wants + it's a fair bit less stress on the wallet.

    Many thanks Regards Mark

Just take the G Shock, or maybe buy a new watch? ;)

Interesting perspective, and i'll give that some serious thought.

The 268 is a wonderful watch, Mark, and you'll have no problem with it of your wrist is 7". Have a search on my blog under Panerai and you'll see photos/wrist shots of both that and the 380 (same sized case but it sits a little lower than the 268).

    Take one mate.

Waterproof, one you'd be gutted if damaged or lost but not suicidal, certainly not a teenage plastic jobbie and you could actually try to be cool too...

Any of the two Seiko's it is then, a couple of straps and a changing tool.

Found the Pictures thanks, I find my Pam 24 a bit clunky on the wrist as well hopefully the 268 will sit a little better.

G-Shock for the beach, MM for the daytime and Glashutte for evening.
    Too much choice maybe?

Thanks chaps, and there's one other factor to take into account in deciding on the Daytona or the GO. Due to the very specific strap/case design, the GO can't be stored flat in a travel case and has to either be worn or kept as it would be on a watch roll with the strap curved. That alone makes the Daytona more convenient to travel with.

Blimey.. When did the Daytona arrive....

tough one.. I wore a gshock to the Caribbean.. And the the kids nicked it and I wore nothing for the rest of the holiday.. Nicely filled in the wrist tan patch :)

  24. #24
The JLC is gorgeous but for me it would be more useful as a watch if the evening's are more formal or semi formal. So on that score I'd be more inclined to wear the GO as a more versatile watch which still looks the part.

Daytime for me would be the Heur Atavia, that is one cool looking watch, original without drawing too much attention with the added advantage you can use the GMT function on it for UK time.

Beach, any of the Seiko's that had a sapphire crystal as guaranteed the sand will scratch any mineral one.

I recommend just the MM300 on Zulu for all three proposea. Just take the bracelet and change if you want to, but just the Zulu strap is good enough. That watch can take the beach, just wash the bezel under running water at the end of day and you'll be good. Free yourself from having to choose a watch!

This will tell you if you really want to keep the watch in you're collection as well :)

Just take the G shock, leave all the other expensive watches at home.

Afterall, you wouldn't want to disapoint all the burglars who were looking forward to helping themselves to your collection, having just read your announcement to the whole world that you are going away on holiday.

I take cheap watches on holiday, and leave the nice ones in the safe. Took a £28 solar-powered Casio and a £7 military-ish quartz that I got off Amazon this year.

Casio 2000 for the beach, JLC for the evening and Panerai for the rest of the day, would be my choice.

But I probably wouldn't take 3 watches and spend half of the day rotating watches :p. One or maximum two, in order to have a cheap tough watch for the beach and a nice watch for the rest of the day.

If it had to be one, it would be the MM300. If it had to be two, a Casio 2000 for the beach and Panerai for the rest of the day.

wot he said ^ then you have no worries about damage or losing it ... I can never take two or more watches on holiday, just seems more to worry about.. I think the day dates are really useful on holiday as after 4 or 5 days or so I forget which day it is ! have fun whatever you take :)

I think it depends, to some extent, on where you're going and what your accommodation is like. If you're in a grass hut on a beach on a small Fijian island, then it's probably a different answer to a 5-star hotel in Queensland. Is there a secure storage for your spares? Apart from the sock drawer, that is.

Personally, I like to have a watch with a quick-set hour hand when crossing time zones, so if the main watch I'm taking doesn't have that, I'd take a Casio as a time check to most places. It also doubles as an alarm. For third world countries, I'd probably avoid something that looks too expensive, so the Daytona would be out.

Of my selection, I'd put the SMP 2264 on a NATO and wear it for everything. Of yours, I'd take the Seiko diver, since everyone from taxi drivers to rock stars wears them, and they won't stand out, irrespective of their value. But you can enjoy a MM300 just about anywhere.

    1. I don´t go to the beach. Drop my gf and son off and go read/flirt on a terrace or visit Málaga with a ladyfriend.
For the former a sporty nice quality not conspicuous yet not invisible watch. Gold on tan leather looks good on well tanned skin.
For the latter anything with a nice story which if opportune one coúld tell with humour; be it the Elektronika1, lugless Amphibia, early quartz, early lcd, the lcd I got from one of the lcd inventors, the pre serie SAR I got from one of the testing Baltic Sea coastal guard captains, the Cornavin ´Jessica´, something I put together myself, my virgin oil filled F91W etc.

    2. That is simple; I have two beaters:

    3. Something dressy in the classical sense, on leather offcourse; quality yet inconspicuous to the point of near invisible. Several of my vintage steel white dial no date and the SBGX009 will do.
