Sad news :-( Watching The Rockford Files with my Dad in the late 70's was a treat for me.
Played some excellent roles !
RIP
B
Sad news
I remember him in The Great Escape and later on of course The Rockford Files
I remember him from Grand Prix which happens to be on this evening
I'm old enough to remember him in "Maverick", loved that programme when I was a kid. Anything with him in was worth watching.
Eddie
Whole chunks of my life come under the heading "it seemed like a good idea at the time".
He was right up there with the likes of Steve McQueen and Paul Newman when it came to 'cool'.
RIP
I used to love watching the Rockford Files . it was one of the highlights of the week
Good luck everybody. Have a good one.
One of the best, loved him in Grand Prix and the Rockford Files. RIP.
RIP James Garner.
How sad.
The epitome of effortless, modest charm - a man's man lady's man. RIP
Gray
Not sure about JYS, but plenty of other Grand Prix greats of the period (1966) certainly made cameo appearances, including: Jim Clark, Graham Hill, Jack Brabham, Bruce McLaren, etc.
This list of credits on iMDb is far from complete: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0060472/...=tt_cl_sm#cast
Although I'm also old enough to remember James Garner as 'Maverick', I'll always remember him for 'Grand Prix'. He was the star after all - playing Pete Aron (effectively the character of Chris Amon from his helmet colours). Jackie Stewart's role was played by Brian Bedford (as Scott Stoddard).
Still, 86 isn't a bad age, and JG certainly long out-lived many of the grand prix drivers who appeared in that film.
Rest in Peace Jim. You never did get tired of the driving, did you ?

Very sad news & like others here, I always made sure I watched the Rockford Files. He always came over as a really nice bloke, on screen as well as, I'm sure, off it.
RIP.
Sad to hear this, fond memories as a kid watching the Rockford Files.

Skating away on the thin ice of a new day
I feel gutted. As all of you have said 'The Rockford files' was sooooo cool and very much a great memory from my childhood.
RIP James, gone but not forgotten.

Very sad to hear this. I can recommend his autobiography, a frank and very entertaining account of an unusual life - and a fascinating insight into that world of the big studios and the movie moguls in the middle of the last century. Some interesting stuff about Steve McQueen and his love of motor racing, too.
Another big Rockford Files fan here. I remember going to the flicks with my dad to see 'Support Your Local Sheriff'.
Seems to have been a nice bloke, always involved in good causes and twice decorated in the Korean War.
RIP.
Fine actor.
I've enjoyed his work in some of my favourite films.
I might dig out his autobiography on the recommendation above.
Very sad, like many others I grew up watching the Rockford files, (the theme is running through my head as I type )
Great actor and a very likeable character. RIP

Same age as my old man...good innings!
RIP Jim
Sad to hear this today. Last film I saw him in was Space Cowboys but would prefer to remember him in The Rockford Files and The Great Escape.
Yes, great actor, especially in comedy roles.
I remember Marlowe, with Bruce Lee destroying his office, but James Garner ending up killing Bruce.
Very sad news about the charismatic James Garner.
The Rockford Files was a super show with one of the best theme tunes ever.
RIP
I remember Rockford Files from a very early age. Very fond memories of childhood thanks to JG.
RIP.
“Don’t look back, you’re not heading that way.”
Much under rated light comedy actor - fantastic in 'Barbarians at the Gate' and 'My Fellow Americans' with Jack Lemon.
A real loss to the fun side of life - RIP
A credit to his profession. RIP.
Whoever does not know how to hit the nail on the head should be asked not to hit it at all.

A good innings, but sad to hear this
Terrific actor and, by all accounts, a very nice man. Apart from his famous roles I highly recommend the mentioned Barbarians at the Gate, he really is hilarious in it.
A talented driver too, he drove the pace car at several Indy 500 races, and I recall somewhere he was visiting a friend on a movie set and ended up being an uncredited driver in a chase scene, can't recall what it was, maybe Vanishing Point.
RIP.
Enjoyed his roles on both small and big screen. He was a man's "man"! He always seemed to be the one who got the crap beat out of him on those TV shows. He will be remembered fondly by his fans.
Agostini Manetta to Pete Aaron, at the Ferrari factory -
"There are fewer than thirty men in the world qualified to drive Formula One; a mere half-dozen, perhaps, to win. At this moment, I am inclined to think you are not one of them." (Grand Prix)
But he did win, and he went on to have a good life, well lived.
I am another one who loved the Rockford Files.
I wonder if you can buy view the original shows
