Looking for a nice birth year watch. (1979)

I have about 7K to spend on a nice birth year watch.

Looking for either a Submariner or Sea-Dweller really but even an Explorer 1 might tempt me tbh.

I've had the WTB up for a fair few days now but had very few offers. One that i did get, i was really interested in, but unfortunately, it's no longer available. :(

Is my lack of offers to do with my budget being too low or are 79's scarce?

Your input would be much appreciated.

I think you might be able to find a decent red sub from that vintage with a bit of patience at that sort of budget.

A Red Sub would do nicely. :)

Maybe widen the search to a nice tudor as well... I've got a '79 Blue snowflake.

For this kind if thing it's really worth talking to people like mike wood, Neil, Giles and so on and tell them what you are after, the hunt is a bit of a project in itself.

Had a chat to Mike Wood a few day's back, nothing suitable in that year at the moment though.

I'm afraid not from 1979 unless you find one thats been sold in that year , Red sub is a lovely watch and you don't see that many for sale nowadays

I used to have a GMT Master 16750 from '79, bought as my birth year watch. Really nice watch and fairly uncommon (but not a very good photo)

Possibly not. Some people reckon they stopped manufacture as early as 73 while others argue it was as late as 79 because the Rolex ads still show a red sub in that year.

The watch has a service dial with luminova hour markers.

Very nice - what would one of these cost these days?

I wouldn't discount the GMT on the basis of utility, its a lovely iconic piece and, if we are honest with ourselves, how many of us have use for a sub or SD!

    I just don't like them.

Also, if i travel i wear either a G-Shock or Suunto and i also know when it's either morning or night.

Fair enough, no point arguing what another person likes or dislikes, it's an emotional choice. I doubt a mcqueen explorer would be in budget so it's either a 1680 sub or a SD then I guess.

Definitely not be careful if buying a Red Sub later than 3.9 million and in 1979 they would be 5.xx million and just not possible maybe sold in 1979
