    Christies Speedmaster 50

Just received a nice surprise. A complimentary and very glossy catalogue of the Omega Speedmaster sale marking its 50th anniversary. They must be desperate: I've only ever bought a couple of watches at one of their sales and that was 5 or 6 years ago!

However, it's full of rare and wonderful Speedmasters (there's one in particular that I have my eye on) but…my word…the estimates! Roughly twice what I would have expected. It brings back memories of Omegamania.

Will values go the same way…momentarily sky-high before falling to earth soon afterwards?

Or will the Speedmaster finally have its day in the sun?

That's interesting, I was on their website last night having a look in their watch shop.

I'm always bewildered at where they get these estimates from, we shouldn't forget that they are trying to make as big a profit as possible so it is better for them if they go at higher prices, so even tho they hire 'watch experts' the estimates don't often reflect true value.

When is the sale? Would be interested to have a look. I think Speedmasters will definitely have their place in the sun in years to come, and rightly so.

I'll make do with the e-Catalogue downloaded from their sale site: link.

Some really interesting lots on there:

    • 145022-69 The Ron Evans Apollo 17 Flown Watch 'Estimate on Request' [!]
    • 3599.99.00 Missions Set 'Suitcase Number One of Forty'
    • amongst others...

I can't imagine there's anything in it that's not online.

It's in New York, 15th December.
