Went for a walk around the village yesterday and I noticed that a new neighbour in the next street has Ferrari parked in the drive. Very nice. I just stopped and started at it for a good 30 seconds before feeling a little conspicuous and walking on (btw just done the same walk this am to have another look).
So I got to thinking which car marques still cause us to stop and stare?
Ferrari
Lamborghini
Lotus
McLaren
Caterham
Aston
is that it?
BMW - no.... just another boring sports saloon, I wouldn't give one a second glance.
Audi... no... just another boring sports saloon, ditto
Porsche... NO.... just another 911 look alike... Porsche haven't done a new car design for 60 years! They move some bits of trim around and change the wheels... that's about it! Common as muck as well ;-)
I'm talking of car marques that appeal to the Athena poster generation. I mean I can't imagine a teenager sticking a poster of an M4 on their bedroom wall but a 488 GTB.... a different kettle of fish!
Honestly, no cars would make me stop and stare, but i would appriciate it for a quick 2-3 seconds if i should happen to see an Aston Martin. I do not think i have ever seen one of those driving around.
I'd probably say Ferrari also. Also, bizarrely, people that keep speed boats on their drive always makes me stare!
i love the look of Maseratis and cant resist having a bit of a stare at them. i think they look super exotic without looking like space ships (a la Koenigsegg et al). I even really like the look of their emblem. If i was a lottery winner i'd have a Ghibli on my drive for sure.
I always wonder what people have to do for a living to be able to afford a car like that but there was one parked in a staff car park outside the bike shop at Bedgebury Forest Park this week so either Ghiblis are cheaper now or we are all paying too much for access to forests and bike shops.

Hmm...three different criteria on the go here:
- "Car Marques that make you stop and stare"
- "car marques that appeal to the Athena poster generation"
- marques that a teenager might stick on their bedroom wall
Athena posters were 1970's...so I'm the right generation. I'd stop and stare at a Bristol or an AC car...and I'd give a vintage Riley a long look too. But it's probable that none of those would attract today's teenagers enough to warrant a poster.
The OP mentions McLaren, but they didn't appear on the scene until the 90's. Most appealing to the modern generation, but not so much to an old fogey like me.
I would agree with the original list, and of course the niche exotica, Bugatti, Noble, Koneggegewhatever , also most classic cars, regardless of marque.... I love to see a humble Mk1 Escort etc. Admired a lovely Renault 5 Turbo the other day even.
I like to stare at Bristols.
I really appreciate sunbeams - always wanted one when I was young.
Chaps
I used to work for the MOD in the 1970s and had an office at Alvis a former car company that made Tanks.
Even today when I see an old Alvis I will spend ages looking at it.
Regards
Mick
Not many Lambos in N.Ireland but I'll always stop and stare and be glad I don't have to park it.
Lotus
TVR
Alpina.
And as the reply above, speedboats on domestic driveways.
Morgan.....especially the aero models....
Noble
Ferrari F12 TDF
Mclaren 675LT
Yep...I'd look at one of those:
Out of interest, which Ferrari was it ?
Great list OP, but I would have to add Ariel Atom, TVR and any British vintage sports car
Ferrari
Lamborghini
Lotus
McLaren
Caterham
Aston
Driving home from work one day last week and a car zipped up the inside of me with Belgium plates. It then pretty rapidly sped away to the next set of lights which were red. As I was a fair distance away I couldn`t make out what it was, from a distance i thought it might be a Maserati but when I got up to it at the lights it was in fact a Tesla. I tell you it sure whizzed away from the lights quick and wierdly quite silent. As it was fairly heavy traffic I found myself pulling up beside it periodicly and couldn`t help but eye it up, again it felt a bit awkward as it being a left hand drive I was right next to the driver, coupled to the fact his passenger was a very attractive young lady in a very short skirt. I was actually eying up the interior and dash etc. I must say I thought it was a really nice looking motor and even though I am in London a lot it is the first one i have actually seen being driven.
A few years back when I was working in Leeds, I'd regularly see a Citroen SM around near the Courts and the Town Hall. That made me stop and stare.
On looks alone a Facel II takes some beating

"Well they would say that ... wouldn't they!"
Bought a car from the Morgan delaler in Perth( sadly not a Morgan ) and don't think I've ever spent longer in a showroom. Owner was great, showed me his new model just delivered, the workshop etc. Never realised they have some weird and wonderful designs. The fact lots of owners store their cars there for the winter make for an interesting visit. When I went to pick my car up must have spent another 2 hours looking at the cars.
Others that will make me stare are old TR4-6, Lotuses and Triumph Stags - remembering my youth.
That's lovely.
My other half doesn't like going out in my Lotus, especially with the roof off, as it makes her feel too conspicuous - it doesn't help that it has quite a loud exhaust as well! As for stuff that catches my eye, there's no hard and fast rule. Modern, old, sports, luxury - I suppose that the the rarer or more exotic it is the more likely my head will be turned however I also appreciate anything that is obviously well cared for and loved, something that the owner obviously takes pride in.
Not a marque but I do like to stop to admire any Group B rally cars. Not that you see many.
Rarities make me stop and stare
Facel Vega (already mentioned)
ISO
Gordon Keeble
Bristol
Bugatti
De Tomaso
And just last week I saw a Lamborghini Aventador Pirelli edition parked in a side street - not near a private bank or swanky hotel or restaurant just parked between two anonymous runabouts. 350 grand's worth. I had to stare at that as it is practically a UFO.
Just back from the London Classic Car show, more stop and stare moments than I could shake a stick at but the lime green and orange Muiras were towards the top of the list along with the early Corvettes. Phew.
And both Citroen.
OP there is no Marque that makes me stop and stare, 30+years in automotive has doubtless dulled my senses, but some models,
Jaguar E-Type
Jenson Interceptor
Jaguar F-Type
TVR, any from 1995 onwards
Volvo P1800 ES
Jaguar series 3
BMW Z3 coupe.
Thankfully now and then someone dares a little.

Nope.
None of the above.
Some Alfas (4C p.e.) and most Maseratis do make me look a second time. Ditto most 'Sport' Fiats; the 850s, the 124s the more modern Coupe are all gorgeous as is the Barchetta.
Yes and the SM and last proper Citroens the CXs make me look twice too.

My poster car as a kid was a red E-Type Jaguar, so from that you can gather I like cars with curves. Ferrari still does it for me as do Aston Martins, which I see frequently, driving past Newport Pagnell every day to get to work. They seem to use the A422 as a bit of a test track! Every time I go to London I see a Lamborghini Aventendor or whatever it is called: I stare at them for the rarity value and lovely sound they make, but all that money doesn't seem to buy you a single bit of body curve to admire...
Another car I could look at for hours...Jaguar XK120....there isn't a single bad angle on that car.
A Lamborghini Miura a drop dead beautiful car from the '60s that still look contemporary today.

I don't generally stare at new cars ,usually rare oldies, the last time I had a proper stare it was a mk2 escort rs2000
Those old Citroen SM’s look lovely. I had a friend who had a late 70’s model, a 2.7L V6 with carbs and I was keen to take up his offer of a drive, right up to the point I got to do so. It was like steering a ship.
Back on topic:
Older Jaguars
TVR’s (most of them)
Bentley's

Ignorance breeds Fear. Fear breeds Hatred. Hatred breeds Ignorance. Break the chain.
^^^Thats a great list that resonates with me, I would also add an Alfa 8C, AC Cobra, Gt40, VW Split Screen camper, DB5, 911 2.7RS, BMW E30 M3, BMW E9 CSL, RS2 Avant, UR Quattro and the earlier mentioned DS, Integrale, Miura, Dino and SM.
Im fortunate that I have a Z3M coupe in my garage.
Damn I keep adding to my list as I think about it more.

Not quite "stop and stare" , but a red Countach Anniversary pulled out in front of me a few hours ago in Aberdeen - and I did say to SWMBO "Wow look at that!"
Volvo.
Old Bugattis just look amazing to me
