A little oil? Geez there's a puddle at the bottom!

And I quote:- "I tried to get it serviced on the cheap by putting a little oil in"
A little oil? Geez there's a puddle at the bottom!
That's quality,I'm no expert but as if,he probably used olive oil
Ahhhh! I just love the smell of WD40 in the morning!
If this doesn't need a new dial I'll be amazed. Hands will need reluming or possibly replacing. Cost will mount up for whoever takes this one on.
Can't believe anyone would be daft enough to do this........maybe he thought it's like changing the oil on a car
Paul
That's brilliant
It's like imagining your car will be fully serviced and fixed simply by jet-washing the engine.
What does that sentence even mean?! ...tried to get a service
The great British public never cease to amaze me. Presumably the watch had a fault which he thought he could fix by drizzling some oil on the movement.
As stupid as it was, at least he has been honest about it.
Something that a lot of ebay sellers could learn from.....
Absolute travesty - I know it's a Tag, but it didn't deserve to be treated like that!
Brilliant made me laugh!
still cheap, even for parts, bet it will push Ł200
I'm thinking of making that photo my screensaver : D
On the bright side, at least it's 200 meter waterproof and keeping the oil from leaking all over the box and papers.
Sure it's a bloke, perhaps seller thought that if 710 goes in the car, it can go in the watch as well
Well done for being honest, but moron for trying, cheapskate.
Easily done...
I fixed a watch three or four years ago for a colleague - not expensive, it was a Seiko 6139 (non-Pogue) chrono and he'd cleaned his fish tank whilst wearing it, with the inevitable consequences.
That was as much as he told me, so we discussed the possible damage and costs - luckily I have 30 or 40 scrap 613x movements and loads of parts so it shouldnt have been a massive issue to get it running again, or too expensive.
He handed it to me in the office in a ziploc bag and when I took it out, it reeked of WD40. Yup, he'd unscrewed the back, and popped it into the airing cupboard for a week, which had worked on his phone when he dropped that into the same fish tank, he said.
A week later it would run but not for long so he sprayed some oil in and observed the results. Then he called me...
I did get it running again and luckily I had an aged dial and handset the same as the ones he'd ruined - Paul was right about that, oil plays havoc with even the non-moving parts of a watch.
My parting advice to him, as I gave him his watch back and relieved him of some cash, was to find a safer, drier pet!
So, after reading this thread I decided to put in a bid on this and ended up winning it!
I'm going to attempt to strip down and clean/service myself.
Time will tell if I wasted Ł200 I guess.
Its not a fake, worst case scenario is you will get your money back by selling the boxes, papers, bracelet and case separately
The oil would have cost him more than the watch
RIAC
So the watch arrived today.
First impressions are pretty good.
There certainly is a lot of oil in the movement but nothing a good strip down and clean won't fix.
The watch even started ticking away once I'd pulled the movement out.
Love the note that was included in the box...
has it damaged the dial/lume?
bit of a bargain possibly. what oil was it.
Interesting turnaround, started off by taking the mick out of a nutter on e-bay, but now it looks like LC has taken a punt and is turning things around.
Good luck and hopefully a good clean and a little TLC will deliver you a quality watch for relatively little money or one you can pass on at a premium, which you would clearly deserve if you did.
I hope this turns out to be an easy quick fix.
Having now taken the watch apart it seems the movement is in pretty good condition.
There was a hell of a lot of oil in it though. You can see here a puddle of oil sat on the automatic works...
Couple more pics of the movement...
Happy to report no damage to the dial or hands either.

Nice to see, but out of curiosity, how do you clean the oil off the dial?
Wonder if he used diesel oil........what an idiot! 😂
Being honest doesn't stop him from acting like a complete dumb arse! Hope it doesn't have kids!
Finally finished servicing the watch this evening, all cleaned up and ticking away nicely...
Awesome work and a cracking watch.

Liking the turnaround and making the most of an ability to service a watch. Good punt and great job. Well done!
Cracking job. It felt a bit like Wheeler Dealers for watches.
Good result for you.
Cheers guys, was rather pleased with myself.
Managed to get a half decent watch for not a lot of money.
Though it does come up a little small on my wrist.
