Thread: 60th birthday watch for a grand

60th birthday watch for a grand

So, been asked to recommend a 60th birthday watch for about £1,000.

Birth-year would be 1956, then (yes, I did maths at Cambridge).

But anything from the 50's or 60's is acceptable.

I have a few ideas but what would you suggest?

I'm guessing that you would be looking for a dressy style rather than sporty diver? Can you still get a decent Pie Pan Conny a omega for a grand these days?
    Cheers..

An original Longines Conquest is well within budget leaving plenty for a new strap and money left over.
A vintage Tudor oyster would also be very affordable.

If on the sporty diver side Oris sixty five. 40mm retro and quite distinct in look.

If it doesn't have to be from the birth year, then how about a PRS-39 ? A thing of great beauty and refinement, may be a little on the large side for some though.

Must admit I'd go vintage style, and something like that Eterna KonTiki on SC at present - no connection to seller - would be ideal I'd say.

This is in sales corner currently. £595 and time warp condition from 1956/57

You'll likely not get closer/ better if small dress watch is order of the day...

The Hamilton Ventura was launched in 1957 iirc. Very much a Marmite watch of course, but mine gets plenty of attention, albeit the rather more reliable modern version.

I was drawn to this earlier this evening. Could fit the bill.

The dial on that watch doesn't fit my definition of time warp. Showing its age gracefully maybe, but time warp? Besides, it is now sold if the identical thread on TWF is anything to go by.

Blinkin cheek!! I'm 64, and I still love the look of sports styles!! I've just bought a 48mm SBB 015 Tuna, and love the look. It has the advandage of addidg a bit of exercise each day. Others might think it looks stupid, but it makes an overweight, advanced middle aged man feel good!!

It was a link to someone's watch for sale that might have fitted the bill, looked nice, good price.

Glad you took the time and effort to quote both my comments from separate posts (?) was it the fat wrists that got to you the most? ;)

Indeed - The French forum Seamaster 30 fits the description, albeit too new at '63/'64, but not that one...

Ah, skim reading - I saw the year was '56, so I figured '63 would be too late, assuming only a slightly earlier watch could be made to fit the profile of a 'maybe birth year' watch.

I meant to cast no slur nor infer any lack of svelteness in your wrists so for any and all offence I apologise unreservedly. My quoting was defective.

My comment was more to do with the seller's definition of time warp which infers that the watch left the factory covered in dial speckles from day one ;-)
