Benarus became Stevral - why the ridiculous name change?

Well, I can't find the reason actually. Their website has the following but he has actually completely avoided answering the question he posed himself.

Benarus has been a very successful brand and I never minded at all the name of their dials, unlike something terrible like Chr Ward.

But Stevral? Really? How naff is that?

I've bought Benarus in the past but I won't ever again with that monstrosity on the dial.

STEVRAL – WHY THE NAME CHANGE?

by Steve Laughlin | Feb 8, 2016 | STEVRAL NEWS
    What is STEVRAL?
STEVRAL has been our corporate name for a number of years and it symbolizes the bond between Steve and Ralf. Every model we have produced has been a collaboration between Ralf and I. From discussion to final product can sometimes take over a year as we work through all the details through countless discussions. Ralf and I are more than business partners, we are friends who are going through life together and happen to design and produce watches together.

I knew there might be some negative feedback with the name change, and you have been heard. But for the most part I have been very thankful and encouraged by the support of our true friends out there who continue to back us. The fact that people are actually out there discussing this name change is a good sign that we are a part of the watch community. I can not thank you enough for this support. It is not possible for me to answer all the forum posts or Facebook conversations, so feel free to share this information where you can, and anyone is welcome to send me an email at info@stevral.com or use our contact form.

I've owned a couple of Benarus watches & a couple of Raven watches also in the past ( I still have a Raven Deep Tech ). Quality-wise they're up with the best of the micro brands regarding fit & finish & when I had an issue with one of them Steve's customer service was exemplary.

In saying that I don't like the new name 'Stevral' very much so that would definitely have a bearing on me regarding any future watch purchase of one of their offerings. I had always believed both Benarus & Raven were both relatively successful brands but they obviously have their reasons for the name change so I wish them the best of luck with it. It would be a shame though if it had too much of an adverse effect on their business as they have produced some fantastic watches in the past IMO.

Exactly, if they produce good products I'll buy them.

I wondered why the poxy name change to Stevral, but let's face it neither Benarus or Stevral are very imaginative or iconic names are they?

Perhaps we both missed the memo; it's about tragic individuals like GrandS posting snide comments about things they have no interest in. There are thousands of other members who are also not interested, they have shown this by not replying- which is fine.

Its intereting that that they have ditched a name with some history (not originally theirs ?) for something completely new, time will tell what a name is worth.

The name & branding are part of the attraction to me.

Would I still feel the way I do about my Speedmaster if it were called a Sinclair Magichrono? Probably not.

Its why I have a problem with sterile dials I suppose.

What was the history that related to the previous name?

Probably none except association, lots of companies have purchased the names of older companies and started trading using the name.

EDIT I thought they made watches in the Vietnam war era.

I had a Benarus Megalodon and loved it, the finish on the watch and bracelet for a watch at this price point was very impressive and consequently I've always had a lot of respect for the brand and have been on the lookout for another.
The name change bothers me and seems like a strange counter productive move for a brand that was quietly building up a solid reputation, their customer service was exceptional. Maybe it shouldn't bother me but it does.

    You mean Benrus.

You're like a fart in a lift - extremely unpleasant but just won't go away. Sad.

LOL, association via being similar! I had always read them as the same name. New theory then Benjamin and Russel sold the company to Steve and Ralf??????

Well, Benrus is from Benjamin (one of three brothers), but the "rus" suffix is from their surname.

Perhaps they are sick of confusion between Benarus and Benrus.

But I have to say that it's not a decision I would have made in their position. It seems inexplicable to me and the 'explanation' quoited about is nothing of the sort. Benarus is a successful brand. Putting 'SteVral' on the dial is, in my view, naff in comparison.

I've bought a number of Benarus watches but I won't be buying any SteVral watches. Perhaps I wouldn't care if they had always used SteVral on the dial but they didn't, so that's irrelevant.

    No thanks.

When successful, don't fix what ain't broke.

I think it was Benjamin + Russell = Benrus

I think it was Benjamin, Ralph, and Oscar Lazarus, taking the first and last three letters.

One of us is probably right.

    Probably.

Looks to me like a trademark issue. There's evidently confusion between Benrus and Benarus as evidenced by this thread. If I were the owner of the Benrus trademark I'd maybe consider requesting that Benarus stop making watches under that name...

Trademark for Benrus is live and was filed in 1922. Attempt to register a trademark for Benarus seems to have failed in 2010.

You are right ( checked the net). My apologies.
