Thread: never thought I would choose a Tudor over a Rolex ... but I did

  1. #1

never thought I would choose a Tudor over a Rolex ... but I did

25 years ago I bought my first Rolex, a submariner
During the last 25 year sI had plenty of them, I guess that's how it goes ... You buy some and you sell to buy others

Anyway when the first black bay came out ( burgundy - red ) bezel I tried the watch and liked it so I bought it
Still have it and no plans to sell it

This year they brought us the Bronze.
Had to see it irl :-)
Tried it and it was love at first sight.

imo one of the most stunning very affordable watches out there
And it is still a great real watch brand too. I mean , after Panerai made bronze a bit more popular after the PAM382 we had tons of bronze
watches but to be honest, I'm not interested in most meaningless brands
Sorry if there are Helson owners on this forum but Helson is the kind of brands I mean
No history, just buy some cases, movements, put the things together and sell it

Tudor has a cool and rich history

Some shots I made last week

Thats a great looking watch and your photographs are excellent.

I think that the bronze works well as its not as obvious as others made from this material.

Personally, I think it would be splendid if Tudor made a 34/35mm hand wound dress watch - a heritage edition perhaps. That's not going to happen though.

    Enjoy your watch!

That is a lovely watch. No reason why you shouldn't make that choice.

It really is a beautiful watch.
As far as newer brands are concerned I agree with your comment about o history but unless we help them make history that will never happen. It really is nice to have a watch fro a brand with deep, rich history but so many micro brands have come up with interesting designs and ideas the last few years.
Also please remember that during the 70s and the 80s the Swiss watchmaking was not so much different than the model you described. So many brands bought components from the same bucket and than just slapped their name on the watch. A Heuer is a great example of that model. It is a very well known brand but you can find exactly the same Heuer branded as dugena, zodiac, lemania etc etc.. this comment does not intend to diminish the history of Heuer which is well documented and respected by most collectors.
    Just an observation...

Lovely watch OP. I am at the point of being able to buy my first Rolex with the no date Sub as my choice.....but then I tried on the Black Bay black bezel version....decisions decisions!

The Tudor is a fantastic watch but unlike you I may still feel as though I would need to scratch the Rolex itch if I bought the Black Bay. Enjoy.

Any thoughts/feedback on the new Black Bay in-house movements. Are they reliable, any problems with them?

I have only seen pictures of these but they don't seem to patina as much as some other bronze/brass watches, which I prefer.

    Great watch

Rolex are arguably the greatest watch brand ; they dominate, and with good reason. But the other side of that is a certain 'boring' quality, a slight sense of 'please, not another sub/Explorer/GMT.......'.
In that sense Tudor offer an interesting alternative without any risk .

    I agree
But the Helson example I gave ... well I don't think Helson will ever make their own watches
I could be wrong but I have a feeling they just want some quick and easy money
Another example is Gruppo Gamma, these are (imo) no watch brands

Bremont for example is another story. Not my favorite brand but at least they do make their own things

    Certainly a lovely looking watch.

    Nice watch and lovely pics.
Even if I find the commentary on micro brands rather rubbish.

My thoughts exactly. I'd naturally prefer a Rolex, but they are generally rather boring and same same. It might not be as good, but I'd much rather a black bay red to a sub. Seems the only time a sub comes up with an interesting colour scheme, it is too often matched with bi-metal and (to me) just looks like tat.

Not to mention while it might not be a Rolex, as a watch, tudors are hardly something to be sniffed at.

Very nice watch. Tried on a Tudor Black Bay an while ago but didn't really like the hour hand, very well made watch though.

If they make one of these in a 40-41mm size I'm in.

I agree, I do not like the hour hand at all, despite its relevance in Tudor history.

There's no similar Rolex so makes sense, and Tudor are a brand whose star is on the rise. I chose one over an Exp recently... altho the Air King might make me swap.

£2730 RRP. I doubt you'd get a discount on one

    Great watch
It's made of an aluminium bronze alloy which corrodes less easily than other bronze alloys. The patina will therefore take longer to develop. Mine has changed quite a lot since i bought it.

TBH I've never really taken to bronze watches, but your pics might just sway me, looks very smart,

Kind of gold but less bling.

Had a look at the Black Bay today with the in house movement. Only £250 more than the old one. Pretty good value I must say!

I have to say that is a very beautiful watch. Nothing there is wrong or misplaced and everything looks right, I'd love one of those.

Yet, whilst pawing over the ceramic Daytona at the Munich airport AD last week, the salesman said they had yet to receive one.

I did too earlier this year when I chose a TBB over an Exp1. I recently considered selling it to buy the new AK but I just wasn't feeling it enough so the Tudor won out again. A CokeC out in Mar however will not be stayed.
