Would you sell a Great White GMT for a 2254.50

Just a little question for the forum.
I would say that my Great White was my first proper watch and it's been everywhere with me. However I'm not getting too much usage out of the GMT bezel and fall in and out of love with it.
As a general opinion do people think that a swap out with a 2254.50 Black dial sword hands is a good move?

Tough call , both great watches.

For me, it's the white dial that differentiates the GF (in a good way) from the multitude of black dialled divers, plus a positive in my book that it doesn't have the HEV.

Conversely, the 2254 is more legible with the sword hands on black dial.

My personal opinion is that I prefer both the 2254.50 and the 2234.50 (that I have) to the 'Great White'.
I can't advise you on whether a swap would be a good move for you though.

Keep the GMT and buy a 2254 too. Build a collection of watches you like over a period of years. Selling a watch you like in order to buy one you may like a little more is not wise IMO.

    What he said!
And another consideration....try finding an Omega Great White GMT in good condition. They are getting rarer and values are certainly at a premium over the black dials. When I went on the hunt it was 10/1 in favour of the black dialled GMTs vrs white.

Good advice folks think it's a case of save up and have a white face / black face daily alternative.

To add another dimension to the consideration...

For me, this is a huge factor. I much prefer my recently acquired Speedmaster (3750) to my Seamaster Pro (2531), both in terms of my current tastes, wrist time and versatility. However if I had to let one of them go it would definitely be the Speedy as, like you and your Great White, the Seamaster and I have a history and a bond.

For others this will seem like complete nonsense as it is only a watch at the end of the day. It wouldn't play into some people's thought process at all, though for you to mention it, it most likely would.

    Keep saving!

The 2254.50 is probably the only nice watch Omega has done since the 60's so I would get it.

I had my Great White as a first proper watch and it will stay with me.

You seriously can't pick anything you like in 1970s, 80s, 90s or 2000's Omega? Nothing?

Got married in my Great White (closest thing to a dress watch I owned at the time) wouldn't part with it easily. Always hankered after a 2254 mind so can understand the temptation.

If the only issue is that you don't use the GMT bezel much then why not look into changing the bezel? It used to be ~£160 to get the diver bezel and I have seen this modification done (to a black GMT if not the white one) so you'll have a very versatile package. The GMT hand is easily overloooked so won't really be a distraction.

Getting the dive model gives you the He valve which is not remotely positive IMO

EDIT: post #10 here shows the black faced GMT with the dive bezel. Have been tempted myself to make this change http://forums.watchuseek.com/f20/223...el-283239.html

If you really don't wear the Great White that much and you would the 2254 then do it. It's all good and well keeping the watch that is pretty uncommon but if you don't like it that much and don't have the funds to just keep it for the sake of it then maybe it should go. Easy to say of course but I have let things go eventually that I loved but just never wore and as of yet I've not regretted it (too much!)

Shame you can't get a 2254 and have both for a while whilst you decide.

P.S. How many people have tried to buy your Great White so far today? :)

Putting £1500 into a 2254.50 is a sensible investment IMO. Far more sensible than paying over list price for some of the Rolex 'forum darlings' at the moment. I regret letting mine go a few years ago. I already own two SMPs so I`m not looking for a 2254.50 myself, but it's a watch I still admire. I had mine on a Bond bracelet, for me that was the ideal combination.

Just how much is a GMT Great White worth in excellent condition, which also has, say, an as-new unworn bracelet as the owner removed it in favour of a strap the day he bought it.......?

Well prices are a little over the place at the moment though definitely rising. I approached Chronext for a commission sale, they suggested a price that would have been the cheapest in the UK. Though they also suggested more for my Speedie MK|| then I expected. I could only presume they weren't overly aware of the Great White Love that adds some value.

Presumably a serviced Great White can be made to look the business as this will tend to take out swirls from the Speedie large clasp that is a scratch magnet. I'd suggest £1800 to £2000 for good nick. Some American traders are asking crazy money. Think the cheapest I've seen recently was around £1500 but it may have been outside EU so you'd be adding 20%.
Others contributors may have more of an idea.

To answer the OP's question, "Would you sell a Great White GMT for a 2254.50?" Answer: Yes.
I've had both, kept only the 2254.50 and never regretted it. Furthermore, it will be kept, together with a Moonwatch, if / when all others may be sold.
I have had this 2254.50 since I bought it, unworn, from Collie in 2005. http://forum.tz-uk.com/showthread.ph...d-thanks-TZ-UK

    Good advice.
I think they are both special watches from a period where omega were making cracking, good value watches with sensible proportions

For me the Great White is so different, having owned a 2254 I got fed up with seeing them on others wrists. I love white face SMP’s

I picked up a Great White for near on that very recently (from in the UK). I wanted it, so was happy to pay the little premium. Sadly it was on a strap (OEM Omega clasp etc.) so should be able to recoup some cash with that to put towards a bracelet.

It is in lovely condition, nice edges on the bezel and not polished to high heaven. It has a 12 month warranty and has had a recent service, so any problems with it is is covered.

I would save up and buy the Great White and own both. They are different enough.

If you find you only want one, then sell the other without much loss. They are increasingly difficult to find used.

The only nice watch Omega has made in the last 50 years?

Good or job others disagree otherwise Omega would have gone bust years ago!

Not sure if there has been a bit of confusion at some point in the thread but this is what I refer to as the Great White. In terms of bezel it is perfectly reasonable with little glare. The white dial is less easy to read than a black dial in bright glare though. However I do love wearing it on holidays.
This image shows it with a blue Isofrane that goes with it really well I think.

Lovely - I wouldn't swap that, and if I flipped out one day and actually did, it would be on the 'watches you regret selling thread' within a week.

Hey the gw is all brushed.
    It's super kick ass.
    Just change dial and hands.
