Welcome to the forum, and yes it's nice to see you introduce yourself, you'd be surprised how many don't. With regards to your question, what style/s of watches do you like?
Hey guys,
My name's Joel and I'm based in Scotland, after accompanying a friend to buy a really nice Cartier watch and spending about 2 hours talking to the salesman who was really nice and knowledegable I have become fascinated with watches and was put onto the forum by a colleague. Not sure why I felt the need to introduce myself but I feel its polite.
I do have a question...
Nice watches for about £200?? (starting small... I gots bills to pay )
A lot of people have said Seiko's... (bit annoying as I was in Tokyo just over a year ago but hey...)
Is that the general consensus for an affordable introduction to this 'thing' *Tony Soprano voice*?

F.T.F.A.
Hello and welcome.
I'm confident you can get something interesting for £200.
I sense a mechanical, automatic watch would be what you'd want rather than a g-shock digital type watch? Maybe something with a display back, since your new to watches I expect the fascination will enjoy seeing the movement tick.
So, sports or dress for a starter?
Welcome to the forum.Lots of other watches are available but Seiko would give you lots of choice for the £200 price point.
Hi Joel,
Welcome to the forum,
As others have said there is lots of choice in the watches once you start down the rabbit hole (it can become habit forming if you let it)
Any thought on the sort of watch you would like ?
Such fast replies! I really appreciate it!
I suppose that's an important place to start! I really really like the Longine Legend diver and the Rolex Daytona! Purely style ofcourse as I get the prices are wayyy out of reach atm.
@ach5 yeah you're right about the Mechanical Automatic, and a display back would be an added bonus for sure. I think Sports watch to start.

Welcome to the Forum Joel,
Good to hear about your new found interest in watches, however as has already been mentioned, it can turn into a devious madness, so tread carefully!
To add to the fantastic range of watches that Seiko make, I heartily recommend looking at the range of Timefactors watches that our host (Eddie) presents.
They are honest, extremely well made and great value for money.
Looking forward to seeing your first purchase and pictures.
Andy
Thanks so much! Looks great, Il post it as soon as I decide!

Sorry a bit new to those I've only just seen the reply button. I think a sports watch, automatic and mechanical? Open to any gems anyone might recommend though

Thanks so much. I replied below but have a sneaking suspicion the reply button was needed so apologies for that. Sports watches for sure at this stage.

Plenty of choice in the sub 200 bracket from the likes of Seiko, Orient and Citizen
Orient Ray and Seiko skx007/9 are two well regarded choices for starters.
A bit more wodge will get you a Seiko Turtle, if you're happy with the size and retro style than I think that's a very solid recommendation
Good luck everybody. Have a good one.
Great! I'm going to have a look at those! Thanks so much!

Welcome...
Some sensible suggestions given so far. Another option are Undone watches. I ordered one from them not long ago and was pleasantly surprised.....here's the thread.
They have various styles available including sports.
There are some well priced Bulova's in Argos right now! Good watches in their own right.
Hi Joel, fellow Scot here too. For £200 there's plenty of choice. Series of questions to ask yourself first ...
1. New or preowned. Preowned brings lots of brands into your price bracket that are about £375 to £500 new
2. Modern or vintage. Lots of nice vintage watches in that bracket from really reputable brands too. Omega, Longines, Bulova etc
3. Automatic, hand wind or Quartz
Areas to explore would be microbrands (check out kickstarter) as well as the usual seikos. Preloved options would include Steinhart, Christopher Ward, tissot and Hamilton..... but best bang per buck would be Citizen I think

Beware of import fees and VAT charges from Creation though!
Plenty of Seikos to choose from, if you want mechanical.
I like Citizens too( Seikos can be a bit ubiquitous), although most tend to be quartz these days.
Orients, not so sure about, personally, on the design front, but some are OK.
Tissot make some decent watches around your budget if you just want a nice quartz watch that's not a horrible 5 quid eBay special with a bling designer label.
I paid £210 for a PRC200
Dare I say it, if you don't mind 'homages' and in some cases non-functional bezels and buttons, Sekonda make some perfectly good watches for well under £100!
I think I can safely say I'm in a minority in my regard for these though!
If you're prepared to gamble on eBay and/or like at vintage watches, £200 will be you a lot!

What about the russians? Vostok amphibia etc
Good luck everybody. Have a good one.
I had a Seiko SNZH55K1. Automatic diver with a display back. Was about £100 I think. Sold it on eBay for about the same money so easy to move on.

I was in a similar position and while I'm still very happy with the Seiko I bought, I do often wish I'd waited a while and paid a bit more for a Hamilton.
The watch I originally wanted was the already mentioned Tissot PRC200. A watch I have for some reason gone off completely! My tastes have changed wildly since joining this forum.
No it was a panthere actually, my friend was of the fairer sex ha

Welcome,OP
There is no such thing as a general consensus but the closest thing to that is the answer to your question- for around £ 200, the best option is a Seiko.
Hi Joel and welcome. You've had lots of good recommendations already. I tend to buy off piste vintage and there are loads for much less than £200 (but they all cost the same to service :( ). I don't think anyone has suggested spending a few weeks browsing the weekly 'Friday' thread - it will give you loads of ideas from affordable to dreaming, help you decide what you like.
Have you looked on the Timefactors website?
I think I'm starting to learn that! Thank you!!

I started off my "hobby" with a Steinhart, a little bit more than your budget but they hold their value really well..

Great first post! Nice to hear there are others in the £200 bracket. Plenty of choices, especially used. Opens up the ceiling to £300- £400 new.
This is amazing! Thank you!
