Rolex GMT hits tarmac at 50mph

Not mine thank goodness but saw this picture over on the rolex forum. Guy off his motorbike at 50 mph, survived it ok and now wondering if watch can be repaired. Calling Rocco!

Btw, apologies in advance if fake news.

The case appears to be unscathed, and the dial may turn out to be OK too. A service including a replacement bezel, crystal and handset could be enough to sort it out.

It looks remarkably similar to this one which was also damaged in a motorcycle wreck, by the way:

That's why I never wear a watch when on the motorbike. Helps it doesn't fit too well under the leather mind

Glad to know that the rider was okay; my guess is that the bezel wasn't the only thing black and blue after this?

Looks like it was a BLNR. Leave the Rolex home and slap that cheap Casio for bike duty.

  11. #11
Hope insurance covers replacement. How much is the BLNR ceramic bezel. Crystal and replacement seconds hand?

Forget the watch, how can his wrist/forearm have ‘survived’ without any scarring ?

Presumably watch was exposed between armoured glove and sleeve. The dressing material around the watch suggests something on that limb isn't 100% though.

They certainly look better without the cyclops, excuse my ignorance with the Rolex brand, but is it, or was it a BLNR?? hard to tell for me without the bezel insert.

Yes but a replacement bezel, dial and crystal would be charged extra. There could be a £2k bill there maybe.

I just try not to fall off!

A bunch of us used to go out trail riding every Sunday (when there were still trails to be ridden). One of the guys always wore his datejust.

Easy to tell with the 24 hour hand in blue for the BLNR, on the SS black bezel version the 24 hour hand is green.

Half of me is scared of this, the other half is scared of the story where the guy who played Tony soprano had a heart attack and the paramedic stole his submariner. It the worst happens to me on the bike I need that watch at home for my wife!

Where’s your positive intent? Turns out the car in front of the rider slammed the brakes and there was sand on the road so the bike just fell out beneath him. No bend required.

Look harder! That dial and rehaut are scrap, and I'd not be the least bit surprised to learn that the case is too far gone when you look at the 10-12 area that the bezel and rehaut sit either side of.

Yep, seems like are some extra nicks on there upon closer inspection.

Regardless, it’s just stuff. It’s very fortunate that the rider survived better than the watch did.

How does a bezel get ground like that all the way round but the case not? The lugs look too clean. Possible fake I wonder?

Because the case is lower than the bezel, thus the bezel took the impact and wear, thus essentially being a barrier between the case and the road surface?

Still kinda mesmerizing despite the damage...

Would RSC actually take it in for service I wonder?

Better the watch took it than his wrist. Cheaper in the long run.

Ok, so far it needs a new dial, hands, bezel and possibly case. With an impact like that it’s also going to need at least a service too.

    Not much left really....

The only time you ever see photos like this it’s a Rolex. It seems to infer ‘any other watch would be toast, yet this Rolex is still alive’. What a load of rubbish. It’ll cost a small fortune to repair, check your insurance cover, they aren’t ‘rare’ or hard to replace. Also looks a little too neatly ‘ground’ for my liking. I’m calling ‘fake news’

The only way I can imagine this happening is if the biker’s hand got caught under the bike as otherwise it seems inexplicable
    Hope the rider was okay

It’s what’s known on SC as a “little wabi” I think.

When we go away on the bikes a pal of mine always rides with his Sub 116613LB on, ive always thought it a bit risky. My watch always rides inside an Oakley watch vault which is inside my wash bag whick is inside my aluminium top box.

Been knocked off twice wearing the dweller, no damage. Don't see the point of not wearing a watch "just in case!"

When I’m riding somewhere in Europe I don’t really care what time it is, but if I did my BMW Nav V is quite accurate 👍

By Nav V do you mean the additional speedo we are all forced into buying because the other one is always playing hide and seek behind the cradle?

  48. #48
I don't think I've ever worn a watch on the bike, purely as I find it a bit uncomfortable under the glove and leathers. Would be absolutely gutted if that was mine though

That’s the one, although it’s the rev counter I struggle to see, the speedo is fine up to 70mph officer

  50. #50
That took a he'll of hammering I can't imagine the rider got away without a scratch. That's why I wear my beater on the bike.
