Interesting to see them together.
It is great to see that the negative displays are so much more legible than they were a few years ago.
Is it Solar or does it require charging? The battery symbol suggests external power?
I had originally believed the large area around the screen to be the solar panel, but don’t think so now.
I fancy one of these but the problem is i have the new all metal G shock on pre order and wish to try that first and also i only wear watches on a bracelet i.e.combi or the field composite which they don't do for this watch yet.
However my worry on this having owned a few Suunto is battery life.
What is battery life like in real world use.
Thanks Mark
GWG-1000 conversion.
Desert Camo to Yellow.
Halfway there
Although I didn’t change the bezel over.
It must be quite easy, because I managed it
Take out the the 2 hex bolts (careful not to lose the tiny white spacer!)
This releases the black piece between the back of the watch and the strap.
At this point be careful NOT to remove the strap, as there is a tiny pin still holding the strap in.
Carefully pull out the pins. There is one on each side, it’s not a single piece.
You can now gently remove the strap.
Simply reverse the process, and put everything back together.
I hope that helps.
Both external and solar charging - however solar charging takes some time even here in Hongkong during bright days. External charging surely much faster. Will be figuring it out ( and all the other functions ) this coming long Easter weekend. Fully charged while using constantly GPS functions etc it last over 30 hours I read. Gotta find the article. Otherwise without using the function you don't have to recharge. Sufficient sun light will be enough. Btw the English menu isn't released yet :-( Only Japanese version ...

Thanks for the clarification.
To me I think it is great that it is both mains and Solar powered. I think for most uses this will work perfectly.
Check the manual, as there is usually a chart showing the charge times, and variance for inside/outside, or in direct sun etc
Starting the day off with this one
I can't find a manual either, but from Casio Japan's G-Shock site:
Using the external charger, 5 hours to fully charge
Using bright sunlight: 4 hours of sunlight will give approximately 1 hour of GPS use*
From a full charge:
If no GPS used: 29 months power reserve (maximum, using "power save" mode that blanks the display after a while)
If GPS used on "normal" setting: 33 hours (before the GPS stops, the watch will still show the time)
If GPS used on "high" setting: 22 hours (as above)
High setting is continuous GPS logging. Normal is "intermittent".
*From that and the GPS power drain stats I think you can imply that bright sunlight for somewhere between 88 and 132 hours is needed for a full charge (for GPS use). Days or weeks really, unless you have a lot of bright sunlight per day. So it's a top-up/emergency thing really, nice to have and much better than most. But for extended GPS use in the field you'll need some way to bring and power the external charger I think.
Yellow out and about today
and multi-colour
The Rangeman does look tempting. I think I'll wait and see what the next generation will look like before I do anything.
Can you do a new Rangeman side by side with the old model pic?
Thanks
You have one too Andrew? How does it compare?
Another one here saying don't keep posting them Range man thingy's......
I really must get a green strap for my MudMaster they look awesome off the black.
Nice pic's chaps

Apologies for quoting my own post but I hope an update provides an acceptable excuse.
This arrived yesterday and I've not really had too long to consider it due to lesson planning and a server death. I'll post photos when I can but I've written up some notes which I'll share now, before I go to bed trying to work out how to recover a lot of data.
The GA835 is my first ana-digi and sports the interesting 5535 module. At first sight the modes appear prosaic; time, stopwatch, stopwatch recorder, countdown timer and dual time, without city codes. The stopwatch has the record function which is great if you regularly time a lot of things. Even if you don't, you can access the stopwatch from the timekeeping mode with one button press.
Dual time is a scream. While there are no city codes and you can only have one other time zone entered, it's great to have the other zone in the digital window. Better yet you can swap your time with the other zone, so that the hands move to show the dual time and your time is in the digital window. Very handy for travellers. There's smooth travel of the hands, which are quicker going forward rather than backwards.
There are 5 alarms but no snooze. There are hourly beeps but no flash alert. The beeps are good and loud, better than my 5xxx an 69xxs. There is an EL mode and you can set the two LEDs to show for 1 or 3 seconds on the external button. The two LEDs are at 9 o'clock and at 6 to backlight the lcd window. They're exceptionally bright, although not as powerful as the GD350.
Lume is present on the hour and minute hands but not a lot and it's not brilliant. You're going to use the light button.
There's no solar or atomic but the battery is set to last for three years plus.
As predicted, the seconds hand hits all the markers, so shame on all the Swiss and other manufacturers who cannot manage this. If an inexpensive G-Shock can why can't they? You have the option to realign the hands if they do ever go out of alignment.
It's closest in size to a 6900, although obviously with much more crystal on display. It apparently takes 6900 bracelets which means the combi should fit it.
The buckle was plastic, not a weight saving measure as the 35th anniversary gold keeper weighed a ton and really unbalanced the watch. The tang on the buckle was kept in place with a fixed bar, not a springboard, meaning you have to destroy the buckle to remove it. I did so, as it was horrible. I then removed the metal keeper and added a resin keeper and a black metal buckle from a dw5600-ms from my spares. The watch is now stealthier, lighter and better balanced.
The buttons are blacked out. Although plastic they're responsive.
I like the 3d aspect to the dial and the flash of red 1983. The Lcd is small but very clear. Similar in tone to that on my 5600HR. Not white exactly but slightly coloured. Pinkish. The caseback is a gold coloured standard stamped affair. With the 35th anniversary logo, showing a Japanese movement cased in Thailand.
So far I'm enjoying it and it's a very easy watch to use and on which to see the time, thanks to the contrast between the hands and the dial. As I say it's great to have a quartz watch with seconds hands that really do line up.
I'll post some shots another time. But this one is recommended. I'm happy to answer any questions, once my IT travails are concluded.

Great write up. A pleasure to read something, as well as ogle the photos on this thread.
After your initial write up, I ordered this.....
I ordered it from a UK eBay seller, who I have used twice before. It is due to arrive any day now.
Pretty good for £58 incl p+p
As you say, Casio/G-Shock often put the competition to shame.
How the external charging works. Few hours and it's full
More then Easter

Rangeman
Having only ever bought my (2) G-Shocks from my friendly “local G-Shock” man ( you know who you are!), and being taken by the write up above on the GA-835A, I was wondering if anybody had any recommendations for where to purchase from? There are a number of sellers on e-Bay based in HK and Singapore, and I’m mindful that cheapest isn’t always best, so if there were any suggestions, they’d be much appreciated. Thanks
I've been looking at G shocks since i was a kid andthey have NEVER appealed to me. They always looked like something you would win in one of those teddybear type machines!
Last week a complete impulse buy landed a Mudmaster on my doorstep, from SC.
I'm a complete convert, they're SOOOO cool! So cool in fact that i've just ordered another in the form of the square faced and stealthy black King.
What a complete 180... it's taken me quite by surprise to tell the truth!
MORE!!!!!
I think I know your local G-Man. He could easily feed my G habit twice over, so I'd just stick with him. Won't find a nicer deal anywhere. If you really insist on looking elsewhere, the first port of call should be the Casio outlet. They haven't had a great stock lately and right now as I post the server seems to be down. There are sometimes great bargains to be had for brand new G's with a full warranty to boost. Worth checking out anyway.
