Advert for Krispy Kreme. Not good, especially when I am trying to diet.

Ads are not a problem. Before long I expect they will become watch related and so even more relevant to us all. All the best Eddie and thank you for the brilliant site you provide for us.

What about a win-win for Eddie: run the ads as they are but also offer an option for people who are happy to pay an annual sub to have an ad-free version of the site.

This way he gains ad revenue from those who aren’t fussed and/or won’t pay to use the site but also subs from people willing to pay and avoid the advertising.

Indeed. For a haven from the omnipresent on line intelligence, I would happily pay £10 pm.

I’m seeing ads for vacuum cleaners and I don’t mean the covert dealers who hoover up items on the SC.

I work in online advertising and in my opinion, Eddie can make much more in ad revenue than simply switching on Google AdWords/Adexchange.

Watch/Lifestyle brands would love to advertise to the demographic that use this forum!

  14. #64
I can’t help but feel companies like Blowers, Jura and others would pay to advertise on the forum.

Has anyone bought those breathable silk boxers yet? Could always flog them on SC if they don't breathe as much as I usually like.

EDIT: Just seen that two others have their eye on them. Best get in quick …

Also on UKGSER, I recon I save the £12 many times over. If its an option and helps Eddie I would be up for subscriptions

I think banging on about a fashion item on a watch forum may go over a few poster's heads. Having said that if they buy one they'll look good doing so, or maybe not. Maybe they're aimed at this type of fella.:-)

Agreed at £12 per year it would be a bargain.

Instead of a general subscription, how about a £1 per item listing fee for SC? There could be an exception for items sold for the fundraiser. At least then those who complain about the boots, bags & coats would know these sales posts all go to help run the forum. The fundraiser percentage for dealers would remain of course.

I don't know how many items are listed per year but I'm pretty sure this would bring in a substantial amount. I guess the downside is that it would require some administration but there are a few permanent residents who might be able to help out.

The problem with that is that there are some "dealers" I can think of half a dozen at least, that never contribute to the fund anyway.

Saw the pop up asking about cookies but my adblock blocked the ads.
Forum is somewhere I spend a bit of time and if it's necessary to have ads to support it being free then so be it and I've excluded the site from my adblocker.
Hardly notice the ads anyway so it's not a biggie imho.

I've cut down on the number of forums I frequent in the last couple of years, but I have seen several ways to keep the forum going.
Shuttle ads top and bottom - doesn't bother me, others it may do.

In your face ads - top bottom in between posts, this to me can get annoying.

Subscription - I'm not a fan but I do pay a couple of them for sites I use a lot.

Sell advertising space to users - one of the forums I use a lot sells advertising space to its members normally this is related to the forum in question but occasionally it differs. This is on a small specialist forum nothing like the size of here.

Ultimately it's Eddie's forum and why should he pay out of his own pocket for our enjoyment.

I'd definitely favour small listing fees for SC over ads. In an ideal world an automatic 10p fee per troll post would be the best solution and enable Eddie to retire

I fail to understand why a fee would be an issue. It's not voluntary; either pay or your post gets deleted. Fail to pay twice & you get deleted.

It's just finding a friction-free collection mechanism that would need sorting out. I don't know what tools the forum software might have to facilitate this.

Another forum I use simply has a donate page and a graphic that tells how close to 100% funding the forum is. There's an expectation that everyonme will do their bit and it just works. I'm sure some take the mick and others pay more, but it works and the forum year is usually paid for in months. I'd like to avoid ads but I'd rather Eddie wasn't out of pocket.

Currently I'm being offered a device that lets me watch everything for free. I suspoect that is less than legal and, given how little I watch of anything, dire ad targeting.

An awful lot of fuss over very little and some suggestions that might be relevant to a bigger enterprise with more time and energy to put into varying membership levels but probably won't work here; Eddie has probably gone through the options. One small ad at the top and one at the bottom is no big deal. If they're too intrusive then go have a look at WUS.

Those options don't obscure your IP address, which gives away roughly your geographical location.

The "problem" of users in some way contributing to the forum existing without Eddie having to pay for us all?

  47. #97
    There is another way...

    https://www.patreon.com/

Members subscribe and give voluntarily, what they can afford. If only 100 members gave £5pm, Eddie would receive £5400 pa.

A popular service amongst Youtubers and video creators, but I dont see why the concept can't be used to support a service that we all benefit from. I'd happily sign up for a fiver a month by way of thankyou. I've saved WAY more than that over the years via the advice and relative bargains passed among us on SC.

The problem is that Eddie won't get the money from page loads if people run ad blockers.
