Car Sales - A Common Occurrence - Leather

    Morning all,

Long time lurker here, infrequent poster - only some niche content, I like watches, I like boobs. What can I say. Anyhow, I digress.

I see a lot of sales threads for cars with leather but a failure most of the time to show the drivers/seats outer bolsters. The area that takes all the wear and tear. This screams “it’s worn but I don’t want to show it” to me, but maybe that’s ‘cos it’s my business.

My point for posting is this; if you put a car up for sale on here and it has some minor wear on a bolster or two, If it is, or sells to a location within 30-45 mins (realistic) car travel of Reading, Berkshire I’ll rectify it for free. Send me some pics and I’ll advise. This offer only stands for private sales and private purchasers.

    *Amendment*
*Should anyone wish to use my services outside of selling on here, I’ll do a good deal on the cost plus donate 10%!to the fundraiser *

I’ve offered this many a time to sellers through PM but thought if I started a thread, everyone would know and save me some time.

I think this is the kind of offering that comes with a forum that you like to be part of.

    Enjoy your bank holiday everyone

Not a problem, as I say, the benefit of a forum

No need for any payment if it’s something that takes less than an hour and I can time it in with a retail job

My current Passat with nappa leather sports seats has the bucket seat set-up and over the years the outer bolster has taken a few knocks, jeans buttons wallet in back pocket - It is being sold to the dealer in November when the eventual delivery of my new Passat arrives.

So any tips on prevention or maintenance for new bolsters? please drop me a pm if that is more appropriate.

    All the best
    Derek

Op, I have had some issues with leather seats in the past so I now use a seat cover, due to my job requiring frequent entry and egress and occasionally feed the leather. Is there any downside to using seat covers over leather seats?

    Hi Derek,

Replying here is easier, others with similar wonderings can see the info then.

The best general advice is to not rub it or put any weight on it at all when getting in and out. This is obviously not always practical, but put simply, if it isn’t rubbed the leather finish will last a long time and f it isn’t weighted, the foam beneath will keep its shape and not collapse or fail.

You can get coating systems that provide a 5 year guarantee. These coatings, in my opinion, are unlikely to prevent the damages that they say they will, but what they will do is give 5 years of leather repairs should any need occur. I wouldn’t pay more than a couple hundred pounds for one though. They are a good idea if you get a light colour leather, dye transfer from clothing is a real bugger with light coloured leather.

From a DIY point of view, I’ve found Furniture Clinic products to be the most user friendly. Their leather cleaner and protection cream use will slow down the wear rate. Nothing will stop wear completely. Other products on the market I’ve had experience with can streak or bobble if applied incorrectly.

    Hope this is of help.

Just to add to the thread.

I've found that the best car leather cleaner costs 79p.

Pears Glycerin soap with a leather brush and damp microfibre cloth will clean up leather seats to an as new condition.

The selection of cleaner shouldn’t be based on instant performance. The make-up of the cleaner is far more important to ensure the correct ph balance and natural oils content of the leather for the future.

Not a bolster, but have a section smaller than a 5p piece on the base of my Z4M black leather - caused by placing an iPhone 5 between my legs & it rubbing for a journey.

Is this something that can be done also? I’m in Binfield & happy to donate to the fund raiser vs plough on myself to resolve (or attempt to!)

    Cheers

    Matt

Do you ever get over to Abingdon OP as my SL has a rub mark on the backrest bolster that I’ve often thought needs tidying up.
Great gesture by the way 👍

Not surprised, very kind offer. Unfortunately my wife hates leather seats so doubt I'll ever be a customer!

I was going to give the seats of my e93 a going over with the Pears soap, can you recommend a conditioner to use after?
    TIA
