Another one in the same vein is Lee Marvin in 'Paint your wagons'

I cant imagine those songs from My Fair Lady being done by anyone else now

I'd completely forgotten about Paint Your Wagon - as I recall, Clint Eastwood also sang a few numbers - just off to look in You Tube now!

I have to disagree with you. He was a bit shaky at the end of his life, but that's excusable considering his health. Other than that, he was a perfectly acceptable singer.

Indeed. Great bass. And even his Hurt cover is outstanding, despite his shaky voice.

I think that he was impressive up until the end

His version of 'Hurt' is superb

Waiting for the Burt Bacharach tribute on BBC4 last night, caught the end of TOTP. What was on? Mariah Carey screaming how she couldn’t live any more. I’d forgotten how truly shocking she is.

Another who can’t sing - Rufus Wainwright. His rendition of Kentucky Bluebird in the Bacharach tribute was the pits.

I've never understood how anyone can listen to Elvis Costello. Terrible songs, awful voice. Talentless sh*te that seems to attract a cult following.

No, you’re just wrong. Granted, he may not be as good as he once was but his 20th century work was great.

Agreed, saw him do a very long set in Glastonbury 1987, nearly two hours on his own with an acoustic guitar showboating all the songs he'd written for other people, then a full electric set with the Attractions. Incredible talent.
And none of us were as good as were were in the 20th century ;)

Interesting take! For someone so talentless, interesting that plenty of greats (including the recently departed Burt Bacharach and also Paul McCartney) have been happy to collaborate with him.

Interesting though that Tina Turner and Mariah Carey get pilloried and nary a complaint yet Elvis Costello who isn't even in the same galaxy as those 2 artists gets resoundly defended lol.

Absolutely Venus as a Boy a special song.

    If were talking woeful singers

Duffy - how to sing like a tortured cat
George Ezra - how to sing through your nose

I've found that female country singers with a background in gospel singing - are phenomenal singers.

Something to do with belting out those 'Jesus bangers' every week!

    Define singing.

The trouble with all these threads is that it's not all about the ability to hit and/or hold a note.

Great singers/songs are about how they make you feel.

That's why Maria Carey's Without You is so truly horrendous. She turns it into an exercise of vocal gymnastics, possibly very clever, but, to my ears, horrible.

She's removed any emotion from the song and the despair of Nilsson's version is left to the despair at having to listen to the dreadful cat in a tumble dryer sound she outputs.

Most of the singers being cited here have produced some good songs.

Perhaps if you're into opera, the ability to hit and sustain notes is what it's all about, but mostly we're talking about pop/rock singers here.

Geddy Lee of Rush. One of my favourite bands and phenomenal musicians but if only they had a dedicated vocalist.
Entirely different genre - Terry Hall of The Specials rest his soul.

Some mainstream pop vocalists have fantastic voices. The kind of thing you see on The X Factor or The Voice. Vocal gymnastics to impress judges and a specific audience. For me that's where their talent seems to end. The kind of musicians we're talking about have depth and soul and presence.

I remember seeing Mariah Carey on a Live edition of Top of the Pops. Bad on an epic scale without the production element to her music.

Madonna. She'd wouldn't even get an audition in one of those talent shows.

Yes, because "a huge number of people" always know best.

Proof: Barbie Girl, The Lady in Red, Macarena; or McDonalds, Boris Johnson and The Daily Mail.

Wow! Checked it out and you’re not wrong. I’m not a consumer of “recent” music but when did adding loads and loads of spurious notes that aren’t actually part of the tune of the song become a thing?

in my opinion Boy George cant sing any better than a pub singer live, the music industry use clever software to enhance recordings. They can make below average singers sound good.

Rita Ora - her role during live gigs is to clap and shout "C'mon, Glastonbury!" while her back up singers get on with singing her songs. She can't hit a single note live.
In contrast to what other people have said, Adele and Florence never miss a note live. I've seen them both, Florence last week in Bournemouth. She was amazing, put on a really great show and her vocals were perfect.
